Crysis - custom config, or vanilla?

Howdy

I've owned Crysis/Warhead/Wars for yonks now, but I'm finally getting round to playing through them - is it generally recommended to use one of the more popular custom configs, or to play it through 'vanilla' the first time round?

I'm only a few levels in, and I must have been shot at a million times whilst I just stand there and take in the gorgeous visuals

I used a custom cfg for both. No idea which one it was (it is very old now), but it looked great and ran great. Especially Warhead.
