Given that the difference between 720p and 1080p is more or less inscrutible at screen sizes less than 40", surely it follow that resolutions of 1280x720 would be nearly as good looking as 1920x1080.

That being the case, why this general obsession with getting Crysis to run fast at ever more ridiculous high resolutions?

HD is widely regarded as 720P, computer monitors have been using resolutions higher than that for over a decade.

As said, most people use monitors for gaming not TVs and the difference between using 1280x720 vs 1920x1200 on a monitor is MASSIVE.

Penis waving competition in regards to smooth gameplay and fps, its like watching children in a sand pit trying to out build each others castle. Other then the graphics, the game is complete crap as well.

For starters, you've missed the other variable with screen size - viewing distance.

This is true. I'm afraid I don't have a desk/monitor combo. Prefer to lay out on the sofa with my Xbox controller. 720p does for me. the step up to 1080 is just noticable on my 40" screen - there's definiately a bit more clarity and depth to the image, but its not massive. I wouldn't sacrifice smooth framerates to get there with PC gaming tho.

If I'm playing it on my PC monitor, I do so at 1680x1050. But on my HDTV I always play Crysis at 1280x720. It still looks great and more importantly, runs smoother. It's as somebody said earlier, when you're at that distance it's probably better to lower the resolution to 720p and enjoy the smoother gameplay.

On that tangent, I absolutely love playing Crysis with a 360 pad. Same for Far Cry 2. Those two games support the 360 pad really well.

a man after my own heart. my pc is the hub of my entertainment world. media center is the future (even if Sky/Virgin don't realise it yet)

Pixels per inch factor in as well. PC monitors have much denser ratio, and given that most people sit around 2 feet from their monitors versus 6+ feet from their tvs, the 720p vs 1080p on screens smaller than 40" doesn't apply.

And there's the fact that most, if not all PC monitors look best at their native res, which is higher than 720p in most cases. It's made even more noticeable being sat right in front of it

i agree mouse is probably more accurate, but again non-conducive to a lazy sofa based environment.

Give me comfort above fps pwnage any day.

i can't be the only person who thought that what the phantom turned into was actually a really good idea. if hilariously overpriced.

Crysis would look like complete carp @ 720p on my 24'' one foot away. If I was going to play it at that resolution, I may as well have bought a cheapo 19'' LCD.

the phantom being what, exactly?
