Crysis in HD

buy an HDTV and a gamepad then, and enjoy higher framerates like me.

Yeah, and at the same time I may as well just buy a console

I'm a PC gamer because I enjoy the technology. I want to play games that look like they were made in this decade, and I don't want to be saddled with ridiculous gamepad for FPSs :)

720p and 1080p are "inscrutable" to console gamers, there is a world of difference between 720p and 1080p on a 20" PC monitor.

PC gamers buy extreme HD monitors because they can tell the difference, it makes sense that they want to take full advantage of the screen space available to them.

It's easy to say it's all about epeen, but epeen or not, it's not unreasonable to use what you have got.

Personally I play it at 1440x900 (1680x1050 being my native res), but I would love to be able to play at my native res, the difference is massive.

pc gaming blows console gaming right out of the water as far as gfx and performance. That being said I can get use to any controller or mouse + keys within a good 20 mins. I don't play fps's to sit on the sofa, I'm the one doing all the pwning! Mouse + keys beats the noob sticks any day of the week for that. The day I can plug mouse and keyboard into a console, will be the first day I ever consider getting a console.

Not to mention my wife pwns the tv, so that's another reason I got into PC gaming. It also helps to have a nice 20in or bigger monitor with a nice desk and comfy chair. I have a "gaming station" a "cockpit" if you will, as opposed to a living room that I mess up by just breathing in there:D

anyone else find it a little weird at first when at someone else's thrown? The chair in front of the pc is like off limits except to it's master, unless invited and then it's weird at first still. Like driving someone else's car with them as a passenger.

Given that the difference between 720p and 1080p is more or less inscrutible at screen sizes less than 40", surely it follow that resolutions of 1280x720 would be nearly as good looking as 1920x1080.

That being the case, why this general obsession with getting Crysis to run fast at ever more ridiculous high resolutions?

Ridiculous high? 1280x720 ridiculously low... Also you seem to forget you sit like a few inches from the monitor, while a few metres from the tv...

Because my monitor has a native res of 1920x1080 and using 720 makes it very ugly and blurred.

You would notice the difference.

because if you have a 24" monitor the native ress is 1920, so you really need to run it at that to get it to look it's best things look worse on non native resolutions.

This is true. I'm afraid I don't have a desk/monitor combo. Prefer to lay out on the sofa with my Xbox controller. 720p does for me. the step up to 1080 is just noticable on my 40" screen - there's definiately a bit more clarity and depth to the image, but its not massive. I wouldn't sacrifice smooth framerates to get there with PC gaming tho.

A tiny fraction of XBox games run at 1080p, some dont even at 720p (egCOD4, Halo3) if they ran at 1080p, it would be very noticable better on a 40inch tv IMO.

Right well, I just got my new 4870 and i'll fess up now, 1080p does look a lot better on 40" than 720p. The 4870 runs most of my games very well at 1080p, with the exception of Crysis which struggles, so I just keep that at 720p (still looks great).

The difference is not so noticeable on movies and TV, but on games the extra detail is highly beneficial, as many posters have said.
