What if you download for early use.....but have pre-ordered anyway ;)

oh come on, pull the other one. How many people who download the full version of a game are then gonna think, hmm, this is quite good actually. I'll now go and spend £30 on a shiny box and manual?

Might work for a downloadable demo where you only get a level or two.

hello, lots of people, like me dont want to pay for a game after playing the demo(which usually only shows some of the better aspects of said game) without having a go at the ful one first, just to get a better perspective on the game.

just bought the PC GoW and Crysis as a result of having a proper go first :)

The demo of Crysis was pretty big wasn't it? I played it for 20-30 minutes soaking up the atmosphere and seeing how it ran on my system. I would have thought that would be sufficient to tell whether it was your kind of game or not.

I think the issue is that the "oh, don't flame me about posting full game screenshots before release as I'm gonna buy the game anyway" line is an easy one to produce in an attempt to disguise piracy.

Whatever your or my view of piracy, it's pretty clear recently that people are getting more and more open about discussing illegally obtained material and that it seems to be going un-punished by the mods

This is having the effect of turning many an "official thread" (yes, that phrase is getting annoying) into a barbeque. Surely it can't be that hard to leave discussing and posting images of full release titles until full-release date?

edit. Just to point out that this rant is not directly at BoD.

i see no images of un released content

i agree, as demos go, crysis was pretty good, but i have played many demos that were good, only to buy the game and be hugely disapointed ((BIOSHOCK F T L)(:()(this was one i didn't download, and i kicked myself for not doing so, as i hated the game, but loved the demo) so still ike to check, i agree, people who are blatantly doing it, as well as posting pics and spoiling it for the rest should be lined up and shot :p but i have nothing against piracy myself per sae, as long as if you like the game/music track/ what ever, you give the devs/musicians the money the deserve and if you dont, you dispose of all data and cease to play.

i tend to do it with most games, it came from the fact that before i had a job i had very little money, and couldn't afford to sink £20-£30 into a game which i wouldn't enjoy. Now i have a job i don't need to do it so much, but considering how appalling games are these days, and how much demos only focus on the 'omfg! awesome!' bits i still feel the need to double check i'm not wasting money :( (Clive Barkers(sp) jericho(again, sp))

So, is it ok for someone who cant afford to buy the latest fashions, to simply go shoplifting to see if they like it or not? I think not. If you cant afford it, don't get it or wait until a few months pass, then it will be cut price.

Reviews, if you read enough of them, will give you an idea if the game is worthy or not.

Piracy killed off the music industry as it used to be (actaully this is quite bad, no descent music being made, cos everyone knows it will only be downloaded). It also killed off the Amiga.

I actually did that with CoD4, i didn't have the money for it so i got it via naughty methods. I liked it so much i canceled my mario pre-order and bought that instead.

Unsure whether that makes me a mug or a good boy but hey ho

yeah, too be fair there aren't that many products and services you even have the opportunity to follow the try-before-you-buy approach. You wanna buy a car, you might get a half-hour test drive but to really check it out without buying, you'd need to nick it.
I also don't get the opportunity of nipping into the pizza hut and asking if I can try a pizza to see if I like it or not :)
Games developers are being fairly generous even releasing a demo.

no, thats not quite the same. you can try out clothes in store, and get the full effect, it's not like they give show the public a cutting of the fabric, and expect to buy games based on that piece of fabric

not necessarily, whats good to one is pap to another. (HL2+ EP1 for example, recieved brilliant reviews, but i couldn't stand them(i like EP2 though(all of which i have legally)
and i do read reviews, however often i find they go with hype to much, and often don't point out the cons as much as they coukd

agreed, and it's a shame, although there still are some very good bands out there, and i continue to support them by buying their albums.

there are however some bands that actively promote the piracy of their albums, as it increases awareness of said bands, thus increasing sales of tour tickets and merch, which are far more lucrative than singles and albums.

anyways, i'll say no more on the subject appart from:

piracy is bad, it damages sales (possibly) so don't pirate. I dont :)

If I like music I buy it, not if it's crap I don't.

No. Stealing a tangible item is different.

If you shoplift some clothes, they're gone and can't be sold - there is nothing there to sell.

A game on the other hand can be duplicated from 1 copy, and that copy can still be sold.
