I'm gona make a prat of myself here and ask whether crysis is Vista only? I know it supports DX9 cards but does that mean you upgrade to vista and keep your DX9 card and upgrade to a DX10 later or will Crysis work on XP and a DX9 card. Again sorry :o

It's not a Vista exclusive, but DX10 is vista exclusive, so for full blown detail graphics, you'll need vista + DX10 card.

Crysis will work fine on Windows XP in DirectX 9 mode, it's only if you want to run it in DirectX 10 mode that you need a copy of Vista and a DirectX 10 graphics card. :)

Ah all I wanted to know. Want to get myself a 24" Monitor and a 7950 GX2 and was worried it won't work unless I get Vista, my bad. Cheers :)

Having Vista will allow more objects on screen etc as well due to the improved driver integration. It will make all your games faster supposedly.

Only in DirectX 10 mode. In DirectX 9 mode a game will look the same on either OS assuming the hardware used is similar. :)

Not exactly, the new implementation of how drivers work in Vista means that all your games should perform better whether your using directx9 or 10. I remember the crysis team saying this somewhere and that Vista users will have more objects on screen, but whether they meant Vista users with DX10 cards or any Vista users was undefined.

I'm not too fussed about the extra effects yet. I won't be upgrading to Vista till late 2007-early 2008 anyways. I'll get a newer graphics card then aswell.

EDIT: I also heard that DX9 games will perform better under Vista aswell due to the way the drivers work.

Depends on the hardware involved and how far Vista coding goes. I know it's still in beta but so far Vista lowers performance and 3D Mark scores, and I can't see that changing considering the much higher system requirements.

When you say "more objects on screen" I clearly remember this article which says that the DirectX 10 version will allow for more effects and more objects on screen, and I think you're remembering the same thing but not in the same way. Operating system has nothing to do with it, it's the graphics/physics API that has the final say on how many objects you can display.

K here's another silly question. Will DX10 cards run XP ok? Can one get a DX10 card when they are released and then get Vista later on? :o

Aye a DirectX 10 card will be fully Windows XP compatible, you just won't be able to run games in DirectX 10 mode unless you upgrade your operating system. :)

To my knowledge, the only confirmed Vista exclusive game is Halo 2; however after looking at the screenshots it doesnt look like itll be running DX10 as standard (and if it is, I doubt itll be utilising it as much as Crysis will be).

Halo 2 could probably run on a DX8 system!! It looks that ugly in the screenshots. It doesn't need DX10 at all to run, it's just MS trying to get exclusives to get people to upgrade ........ Halo 3 on the other hand.......

Dont know about that article.. i was referring to this though.

"What's interesting is that Yerli told us that if you have Windows Vista and an older DirectX 9 card, you should still see better performance with Windows Vista than Windows XP, even if the hardware remains unchanged. "DirectX 9 on Vista will run faster throughout due to the better device driver model...which is a great thing because just upgrading the operating system on the same rig, you get a better gaming experience," he said. Aye in theory Vista should increase performance in DirectX 9 apps (with terrible results so far, though it's still only beta and too early to say.) The "more objects on screen" thing is purely a DirectX 10 feature though.

well, with RC1 now publically available, maybe we'll find out today/soon if they have improved that aspect of it

With Vista and DX10 out will we still be able to play older games made in the XP and DX9 Era?

As said above a few times, its supposed to run older games faster too, so yes :)
It'll always have a few that don't work (just like XP from 98/ME), but on the whole its ok. Every game I've tried so far works just fine.
