If Crysis were to be released recently (as opposed to 4 years ago) would it have been considered by the masses as more than 'just a tech demo'?
Personally I think it is an excellent game and it's faster-paced, more dynamic thinking-on-your-feet combat would make for a relievingly unique entry into shooter season 2011.

More people would be able to play it today, due it it's ridiculous system requirements and arguably badly-optimised CryEngine2 so it's possible that it would be much more popular than it was, maybe even sprouting a large modding scene. It could possibly be popular enough in the PC market that Crytek would consider making an actual sequel; not that rubbish that went multi-platform (I won't go into that now).

So what do you think?

I think it would have taken off a lot more, not just because more peopel could run it but because like you say the gameplay is more dynamic and engaging than a lot of shooter season 2011.

In answer to the underlying question, yes there is much more to Crysis than a tech demo, it is also a very good game and I think it is superior to any shooter released this year.

I'm not so sure to be honest. Vanilla crysis on very high is still one of the best looking games. A modded crysis is better looking than other games atm I think.

I don't think the engine was badly optimised at all really. It's just that there were so many different options that people simply don't have time to tweak it to suit their needs (hence the various configs available).

As many might know, I love the eye candy crysis gives, and post many pics of it in the high res screenshot thread. But in terms of game, I didn't think it was amazing. It certainly had the potential to be, with all the physics, it's really fun to use the environment to your advantage. But then you realise that you can finish the game mostly in cloak mode. Still, better than COD, in the sense that if you've played MW1, you've pretty much played every COD game since then :D

Also the level where you're in the spaceship (VTOL I think). Possibly the worst level on any videogame ever.

Still, Crysis was to an extent unique in its gameplay and I feel that if a suitable sequel is made, with a little more care to gameplay and level design, then it has the potential to develop into something awesome.

It is a really good game, far more than just a tech demo. It would have beaten most of the rubbish out this year.

Guessing it's not worth playing Warhead. :p

people would call it a good shooter with nice graphics, the suit was fun and having some latitude in approaching scenarios was interesting, its a really good game but was never a classic, its only mentioned so often because of how obsessive PC gamers where on getting it to run back then. From a game design stand point it doesn't do anything memorable at all (except **** everybody off inside the spaceship).

I think you know there's something interesting about the game when one can say they have completed it using no ammunition (except when forced to progress).

All the Crysis games have been excellent if you had the hardware to play them. The original Crysis is still one of my favorite games. Can't think of any FPS shooters that have matched it yet. Playing Hard Reset at the moment and while it a good fun it pales in comparison and yes I realise its a indie but what else is there?

I have to admit though. When you take everything into account, the first half of the game is really good. The atmosphere is awesome, the environments are nice and varied, and you can adapt the gameplay depending on how you want to play. Then when the aliens come it goes downhill a bit. The ice level was actually fun for me, despite the amount that complained about it.

It isnt perfect, but I admire it because its was one of the last proper PC shooters and pushed the boundaries somewhat. The engine was way more advanced than enything else so even though the hardware at the time couldnt cope, at least it showed us what was/is technically possible and thats what PC gamers want to see. These days theres no ambition and thats why we've been playing the same games for the last 4 years.

OK how many members here don't own crysis ??

I say just about every PC gamer that likes FPS games will own crysis ;)

It would have been far more popular today because the average shooter in the last two years are much more linear, derivative and soulless.

Disagree, its about cost of production and return of investment, if anything Crysis was a poster boy for the pitfalls of big budget single platform development.

Simply not true. They made a massive profit on it, which was enough to fund development of the next engine as well as a multiple-platform launch for the sequel. They also bought out Free Radical long before Crysis 2 was eventually launched.

They didn't make a massive profit at launch, warhead performed well for them because Crysis carried most of the R & D costs and they reused a large majority of the assets.

To date sales are healthy but the original launch was very underwhelming for Crytek.
