Hey,

I don't really understand how these work and what they affect, i.e. if your update and cmdrate are higher how will that effect game play?

Basically it affects how much data is transferred between you and the server.

I don't know how it exactly works, there's a guide somewhere on the net, so I'll post that if I find it later.

Basically though as long as you have a half decent line, rate 25000 cl_cmdrate 100 and cl_updaterate 100 will stop people moaning at you.

ever played people with rates of 10 or 20?

Most annoying thing ever when no shots register unless they are standing perfectly still

I feel like that now, last week I was playing amazing.. near top all rounds

This week im always bottom its like somebody lowered my skillz :/

Certain rates can change your hitbox.

Yes, it is the number of times it sends packets to the server per second i think. And people saying that players with rates of 20 are hard to hit, it is equally hard for them to hit you.

as above its the speed that data is sent. there is a legitimate reason to have low rates though, for instance if you on dial up or really slow BB then you should lower them to compensate. but not 10 or 20 as thats just taking the michael

20000-25000 80 80 is what I have always used. Going from 10mb to 2mb that I'm on now.
Never had any porblems with rates. Just dont have stupid rates like 10000 30 30

Do you enter the rates into the console?

Are they "remembered"?

Yes into console.

And yes they stay that way, unless you need to change them.

Generally you want you cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate to match the tick of the server. Public servers are often 66 tick, match servers being the highest, 100 tick.

If I'm being honest, unless you have silly rates you won't notice the difference whilst playing. Like a lot of things in css a lot of it is in the mind, people make excuses over very little. For instance I could type in rate 999999999999999999, and it would be exactly the same as rate 30000.

Servers now have 2 new cvars anyway. sv_max and sv_min. If these are set, it doesnt matter what your rate is, as its automatically dropped to the closest. So it the max is set to 66, you could try and use 100, and all you will get is 66.

I haven't played in ages, but cl_updaterate 100, cl_cmdrate 101 and rate 25000 usually got me going fine. No complaints
