CS Source tips/tricks/tutorials

Best tip anyone can give you is get some decent headphones, you rely more on the sounds in CS:S than anything else. Well that's how it is for me.

I play through my speakers, but I play crap so you're probably right. :p

One thing I'd say is ALWAYS buy armour. Never go in without it if you can avoid it. Even if it means you only have the USP or the Glock. You can nick someone else's gun when they get prawned.

Just play regularly and you'll get to grips with it.

Actually, you should probably ignore all this as I'm rubbish.

1. aim at head

2. get a custom x-hair

3. dont stand still. run and gun.

4. learn to noscope snipe

5. if you are scared let someone else go first then when they die shoot the enemy who shot them (while they are busy reloading)

6. scream into the mic when you shoot at someone.

7. Dont let someone escape if you injured them. pursue and destroy.

8. follow an obviously excellent player around in spectator mode. Learn.

9. Defend the objective and communicate/scream with/at your team

10. aim at head

Get a good mouse, good mousepad. Use a low sensitivity IE 2.4. Turn off "Enhance pointer percision" in the windows mouse settings. Turn off smooth mouse movement in css. Make sure your comfy with your key settings. Make sure you get a nice stable fps of 70+fps in firefights. Try not to play public if so go on deathmatch servers. Go on IRC join #mixing.css and find your self some mixes if you have a mic and ventrillo if you want to play more serious. CSS is a luck game tbh, due to the way it is the game is mainley about your config... what mouse, mousepad, headset, keybaord, sensitivity, polling rate and monitor. a lot of factors to count in :o

BTW custom crosshairs dont help. I use one then changed to a normal one and i played better with the normal one.. Also dont play at your native res Im guessing you use LCD res if so dont.. i did it for a year and when i changed to 800x600 my gameplay got a whole lot better using crosshair scale 1200. Although it makes the game look crap it works.

Sound is very important as already stated....

good headphones help - I use senn hd25's.

If you hear an enemy walking around, listen for him.... is he on yer left or right?

Then turn around 90 degrees, and you should now be able to hear if he's infront or behind you. It's like listing for something in real life really.

5.1 surround is also nice, but you need to turn it up very loud, so a detached house is recommended. :) This is because footsteps are so quiet compared to gunfire. I put my sound thru a dynamic compressor which helps, but not many people have music production gear to play counterstrike. :D

I have sometimes music on quietly aswell, but I have it so I can turn it off when needed... I find it helps get "in the mood"... as long as it's not something awful like "the Feeling" ;)

Also, set your crosshair scale to 6000 and the colour of it to teal, number 4 or 5 I think it is.

1. aim at head
I wouldn't bother trying that until you're actually someway decent at the game. If you're only just starting, you'd be much better off aiming for the body, because your aim really won't be that good. Once you get better at flicking onto targets, aim higher, especially at close range.

Also, try to fire in bursts of a few shots instead of spraying wildly at enemies. Spraying is too inaccurate in CS to be reliable, so should only be a last resort option.
2. get a custom x-hair
I didn't even realise CS:S allowed custom x-hairs. It's been so long since they were allowable in CS. I'd stick to default crosshairs myself, they really don't add much.

3. dont stand still. run and gun.
Errr, not quite. Somewhere between the two actually. Don't fire while running, but don't stand in one place when you're not shooting. And when you are shooting, try to move in between bursts, to throw the enemy's aim off.

4. learn to noscope snipe
Or don't. It's unreliable and somewhat redundant. If you're using a sniper rifle, either have it scoped as you go round corners (jumping sideways into it so you're already facing the right way is the best tactic), or have your pistol out.

5. if you are scared let someone else go first then when they die shoot the enemy who shot them (while they are busy reloading)
Psshhh, wuss. Be a man and run in first with a shotgun*.

6. scream into the mic when you shoot at someone.
Haha. Also, accuse anyone who kille you of cheating**.

7. Dont let someone escape if you injured them. pursue and destroy.
No, no, nooo. You risk running into a big mass of enemy players if you do that. Stay close to your team, or to an area you know is clear. Chasing people will often get you into trouble.

8. follow an obviously excellent player around in spectator mode. Learn.
For truth.

9. Defend the objective and communicate/scream with/at your team
Also yes.

10. aim at head
For the win.

*May not actually result in success.

**No don't.

I love this post so much it's going to be the second time i've quoted it. Oh yes.

Use these weapons in order of cost: usp/deagle/mp5/ak/m4/awp. Honestly, dont bother with any other weapons. There is a reason all the best players use these. The AK is the best gun in the game once you've mastered it.

One that no one else has said yet; buy armour. Vest alone wont protect you much from your average public player aiming at the head (but will against grenades) but its still well worth it. Buying armour and a deagle will undoubtably get your further in a round than buying an M4 and no armour. Check your armour level when buying. If it's over 50% you dont really need to buy it again. Unless you need to add the helmet.

As for sensitivity -- lower it. This isnt Quake.. 9 times out of 10 your enemy will be far enough away to let you make time to aim. A low sensitivity will make it so much easier. There's no point talking numbers at you, as everyone's setups are different -- so do this: Set your sensitivity so that one 'swipe' across your mousemate turns you 90 degrees (*acceleration should be off). Adjust it mildly until you're comfortable. Bear in mind it might take you at least a week or so of regular playing to get used to using you whole arm to walk around. This is the idea. Dont worry if you fail miserably for the first few days -- it'll happen. Most players cant get used to using the whole arm, rather than just the wrist. Use your arm to move around and your wrist to adjust your aim once it's close to a player. Get used to 'swiping' across your mat. If its one swipe to 90 degrees, it's two to turn 180. It's not as slow as it sounds.. the aiming is far more beneficial than the minute chance you'll be able to kill someone that comes up behind you (although its still very possible, especially with CSS).

Two shot bursts are your friends, not 3. On most guns (iirc) only the first bullet is accurate. Aim for the neck and the second one will headshot them; the third would just miss. The AK is the king of two-shot bursts -- iirc it's first bullet is 100% accurate.

If you're close -- spray. Learn to control it. Start aiming at the chest then pull down to the feet. Even further with the AK. The M4 is the king of spray. I'm trying to think of distances, but say in Aztec if you're a CT at the top of the stairs (out of the water) and the T's rush the doors, it would be a 50/50 decision whether to spray or not. Any closer than that and spraying is your best bet -- especially in Source. That might seem like a long way off but it's do-able with practice. The M4's spray is more controllable when using it wihtout a silencer. Use it with the silencer for long distance bursts; this might just be psychological though ;)

What goes without saying; dont move when shooting. Get used to stopping yourself with a quick tap in the opposite direction you're running, then firing almost simultaneously. The faster the better. If you're using the MP5 you can run around like a loony, it doesnt make any difference.

Um, have fun.. ignore 99% of what people say in chat :D

But since you're playing Sauce, just run about a bit, buy an m4 and hold mouse1. You'll win for sure! ;)
