Just a curiosity more than anything, but how good a GPU do you need to get the most out of the likes of photoshop CS5 with pretty large graphics and plenty of layers?

Ive noticed it stuttering a little or "pausing" when using the transformation tool for some graphic work, I have 8GB of RAM, win 64 CS5 64bit, but the graphics card isnt brilliant.

There are certain NVIDIA cards which photoshop supports for certain features which improves performance vastly. However, I used to have a Radeon 5850 1GB card and used to work with RAW images 30-40MB each without issues.

There is quite a bit of info available on the web regarding NVIDIA and Adobe support.

I'm not sure how much of a difference GPU power makes. My work machine is a Q9400 with 8Gb of ram and onboard graphics and I quite often have to work on 100+Mb PSDs with hundreds of layers (thanks to messy designers) and don't notice any slow down or lack of performance.

Work machine is the one in my sig below, no issues here running CS5 PS also sometimes with Fireworks open in the background.

Cheers, I have sitting here an Ati 6570 to install as the weakest thing at the mo was the current card (cant remember its name), so will give that a bash.

It was more a curiosity than anything.
