Hi all,

I'm after a bit of advice regarding getting a Green CSCS card.

I have a job offer (total change of direction for me) as a labourer, but I need to get the CSCS card within the first month of being on the job (its a 2-3 year contract).

Local place to me, Hawk Construction are doing it but its not cheap, £125 for the training, £30 for the card and VAT on top.

From what I can see the costs online are £30 for the card, and passed a basic H&S course for about £18 (mentioned on the CSCS site).

Can anyone point a faster and cheaper way to do it?

Thanks

Just book the CSCS test....its common sense stuff for the green card...passed mine with 97% only thing I actually tried to learn was fire extinguisher colours

ok, thanks for the advice, I'll sit down tonight when the kids are asleep and start doing a spot of reading on it.

Jobcenter will pay for the card but the course itself may be available but I'd have to wait until the next financial year.

That sucks, what about the job it's self.... they willing to do anything

I've only got my "yellow" as I only ever visit sites rather than actively work in them, but it really is just common sense.

Good luck with it :)

It's a doddle, just book and do it yourself. The H&S test from what I can see is mainly there to stop brain dead people getting the card.

If you book direct with the CSCS test centre it is a lot cheaper. The card will pretty much always cost you £30 though.

You can get hold of the revision book which is very useful for £10-£15.

This site might be of use also: http://builderstest.com/category/cscs-mock-test

This is a test centre in Hanley: http://www.thetestcompany.co.uk/stoke-on-trent-cscs-test-centre.html

I believe they charge £30 for the test, but take a look at the FAQ (http://www.thetestcompany.co.uk/faqs.html) for more info.

Additionally there are changes that came into effect last year that may be imprtant to you, and the CSCS site is a useful site, this page is spoecific to the labourer green card: http://www.cscs.uk.com/card-type/labourer/

EDIT - I also believe you need to have passed the standard health safety and environment test to get the green labourers card too (http://www.cscs.uk.com/applying-for-cards/health-and-safety-test/)

I studied the test question book over a weekend, sat the test on a Monday and passed - that was for visitor (yellow). Didn't have to do a course but I already knew a lot of things informally through work as a structural engineer.

As said, a lot about common sense but if you are not confident, do a course.

Book test (Very easy!) Then apply for the card. Fastest and cheapest. Don't bother with a £100+ course it's a rip off

Book it yourself as has been said above.

This is how easy/common sense based the tests are.....I went and sat mine and breezed through it with a 98% pass rate to be told that they'd set me up on the wrong test and id just passed one to do with chemical engineering or some such twaddle.

I then sat the correct test and passed that with 98% too.

Mine was for the white CRO card though.

Buying the revision book should be all you need, if you require a course to be able pass it, construction is probably not the best place for you :p
