Finally got round to giving this a proper go recently, but I have to say I am put off by the sheer brilliant aiming of many people.

I truly just don't understand how people can be so accurate. Most of the time I barely have time to register the fact that an enemy has appeared on screen before this guy has turned, identified me as an enemy, and placed a well aimed bullet in my head.

I have generally stuck to a couple of Uk server I have found, and nobody seems to be screaming that anyone else is ahcking/cheating, so not sure if these people really are this good.

Personally, I just can't get my head around how these people can be so quick and accurate. It's just headshot after headshot. Are people really that quick and accurate? Or should I find new servers to play on?

hehe yeah im sorry to tell you this mate but people are that good ive personaly have been playing cs for about 5-6years and you just can't keep away from this game no matter how hard you try its the only real game ive played for this long

headshots get easyer the more you play and you learn the map and know where people are gonna come it turns into habbit more than skill you learn the hitboxs and where to shoot i can't really explain it but im the same as the people you are writing about normaly top of the table on most servers just from the amount of time ive spend on this game over the years

it will take a while to get into it since most cs players have been around since the dawn of time but its so worth it and you get more hooked than wow!!

Basically it does take a bit of time and practice. The difference between playing something like SOF2, HL2 or Doom 3 where u are playing against AI, it gives u a lot more time to do things, whereas playing against another human that has had more practice than you can make it a bit demoralising.

Give it a few days, maybe on easier servers and you will start to work out where best to aim etc with each particular gun and the Headshots will start flying in.

You shouldn't have to identify whether a person is an enemy or not, as all team mates appear on the radar/map. That way you shoot whatever moves. :)

It'll be difficult for the first few months.

Personally I never thought at any stage when I first started that people cheated, I just accepted people were better.

But after a few months practice i had improved a lot, been playing nearly 2 years now and am at a competitive level.

I tend to keep my crosshair at head height, this way you need to make less movement when you go to shoot someone.

Also at your stage you will probably spraying a lot, to control this you need to learn how use each weapon. So in an empty server, try spraying each gun at a wall keeping the mouse still. A spray pattern will occur, from this you should be able to anticipate where your bullets will go from the recoil and how to control it.

What helps most in css at your stage is sound, use a decent headset and listen for the enemy coming. That way you can expect them and get ready with your aim.

There's lots more, but the only way I'm afraid is just experience by having lots of practice. Speccing better players also helps.

on lower number server (like a 16man, do able on bigger servers but thats more of a rush, spray, die job) you can easily know (instinct) where people will come from, or if you see someones leg dash behind a wall, you know hes going to go down the stairs and appear on your left from that door. It's just an instinct that comes from a good while playing. Also many people are high sensitivity player (try whacking your mouse up full ingame and in windows) it takes a bit of getting used to, but moving the mouse less than an inch for a full 360 turn is great for quick accuracy :)

Anticipation is the key, know where your enemy is going and stand looking at that walkway untill he does, and pop him in the head. Also sound is used, so use a headset and crank it up, you'll be able to hear people form the other side of the map! :P

i know exactly what you mean! the trouble is, practise makes perfect but i'm never alive long enough to get any decent practise and most of the time i'm dead before i even see anybody. i don't think it's very n00b friendly purely due to the fact that it's been around so long and people are so good at it. i periodically try it just to remind me why i hated it so much and gave it up!

Pretty much what everyone has said above really. Anticipation is the key. Get yourself a decent headset too. I'm always branded a 'wallhacker' just because I can hear people coming.

Got a decent headset, and do try and use sound to my advantage.

Guess will just have to play it a bit more and see if I get the hang of it :)

Are there any OCUK servers around? Or servers that people here use a lot? Can be a nightware sorting through that list :D

Before long, I will either love this game or hate it. Along with insurgency.

If you find a decent server (low populated, and with some GOOD players on) youd be surprised how easily they will warm to new people.

We used to get one or two people who had never played the game come on our server, so we (me and a few mates) would lock the server and give them a few hours of training and they seemed to love it :D

But most decent players will understand someone is knew the instant they see them play, and offer help/etc, how to shoot with that gun, or what to do generally :)

Tried playing against bots? Create your own game, then work up through the bot levels.

I hate CSS. It really annoys me when people just spray everywhere at get me in the head straight away when they clearly have no skill. Yet when i aim at the head it doesnt even register :p Im not a newb honest!

Deathmatch servers are a good way to improve your reaction time.

It depends what servers you play on. My clan run a gungame, and any people whoare even suspected of hacking are watched demo'd, and then banned if cought hacking. Most of the time our public notifies us, be it on our TeamSpeak, XFire, or just ingame. You have to be pretty quick, if in doubt, just shoot them, half of the time you arent even aiming for their head, the guns recoil gets the headshot. Strafing helps, as well as firing no more than 3 shots at time. Gungame is the best way to learn all the guns, as you have to use them all. It teaches the weakness and strengths of each class. Play gungame long enough, and normal css doesnt stand a chance . . . . ;)

I've played CSS for ages and I still suck on it... I think some people are just automaticly brilliant at these sort of games.

In a tactical match there's no point in me even playing because I don't last 20 seconds lol. I just tend to play deathmatches, I find them much more fun on a busy server. :)

I had the same problem when trying to port from quake to cs, i was just amazed at the headshot accuracy of people...

Coming from a quake background has it's downsides too, as there is no such thing as headshot in quake, thus most quakers aim for the body.. larger target... The rocket launcher doesnt help either, as you aim at the feet for that one (if you miss, you still deal splash damage)

I gave up on cs in the end, it's fairly enjoyable when you're not getting headshot'd every few seconds, but alas, my skills are bound to quake :D

It's also noticable when a css player joins in our quake games... they have a scarily high accuracy with the railgun, machine gun, shotgun and lightning gun, but generally cant use grenades/rockets/plasma to save their life.

The first gun I only tried to use in quake was the railgun. -.-
Then i found the wonders of a rocket launcher :D

Type this in console:

cl_crosshairscale 25000

Helps me a lot for some reason (Resizes the cross hair to near dot size).
I'd say thats way too much, i use 1800.. default is 1200..

I think default is actually 768 which is medium.

I've been through a phase with crosshairs.

At first I was medium and was a spray noob (good for control though :p)

Then when I found out about crosshair scales, I went 4400 (smallest) and it seemed to improve my aim. Then gradually as I got better I started to prefer larger crosshairs 4400-->3600-->1800-->1200.

I think it has a lot to do with personal preference.

Advantages of very small crosshairs comes with long range rifling when strafing etc... But can be issue as on some maps/textures they can be hard to spot and aren't as easy to control recoil from a spray.
