CSS font colour question

Just looking at Robs post about CSS hack for OcUK forums on Firefox and something caught my eye which I'd like to know the answer to.

Why in CSS do you use font color: #fff;

Instead of font color: #fffff;

?

It's CSS short hand. Same thing as using
padding: 10px 20px 30px 40px;
instead of ...
padding-top: 10px;
padding-right: 20px;
padding-bottom: 30px;
padding-left: 40px;

OK, but I take it it can only be short hand for colours that have the full compliment i.e. #ffffff and #000000 and #222222 if you have #f5a2c6 you would need to add all of it?

If the numbers/letters are different then obviously you need them all in

i think you got it, but just to clarify

#FF0 is the same as #FFFF00
#FB0 = #FFBB00
#EF4 = #EEFF44

etc

you can only produce 4096 colors using the three digit system, so it is very limiting, i mainly use them for making different shades of grey, and ofc black and white
