CSS - Increasing performance?

What should the rates be on? mine are on 25000. I cant say what the rates are of the others, is there a command to check?

I have these in my autoexec.cfg:

rate "30000"
cl_cmdrate "101"
cl_updaterate "101"

Also, you tried using the very latest Nvida drivers, like 174.74. Also open the console in CS:S and type fps_max "0", you never know.

It does look like you have driver issues tbh, re-install mobo drivers or try different graphics drivers??

Your fps is too low for that system

Limits your fps to your monitors refresh rate, effectively.

unless your fps cant reach your refresh rate then it just destroys it completely and forces it down to the low 20-30's.

don't for get to set cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate to 100 each

other peoples rates depends on the server, some let anyone run ma_rates in the console some have zb, so it would be zb_netinfo in console others have a mod where !rates or rates typed in chat gives you rates of others.

But there's nothing you can do about it, dodgy rates are massively annoying when it's people who say they don;t know what they are yet have stuff like 5k 10 10 or other ones they have clearly changed.

After a fresh new install back to XP and a new sparkly E2180 OC @ 3.2Ghz, TF2 runs MUCH MUCH smoother. Could be the OS, could be the OC, could be both, definitely an improvement now though. Now to replace the stock fan now it's gotten noisy at this speed...

How the hell does it run so fast on your computers :O

Ive got an E2180 @ 3Ghz, 8800gt, 2Gb Ram and i struggle to run it at 70 constant.

800x600
All maxed
16xAF
4xAA

Must be Vista :(

Why must it be Vista? I get top performance in CS: S on Vista 64.

Could it not be a poorly configured computer?

OP: Do you have colour correction on? I had this on before on CSS and TF2 and I run a very similar spec machine to yourself. Colour Correction when enabled absolutley destroyed me for some reason - I turned it off and everything ran smoothly with no discernible difference in visuals.

EDIT: Also make sure you update your DirectX 9.0c from Microsoft's website to the latest version. I installed BF2 recently which "updated" to an older 9.0c and noticed a hit in performance in TF2. I re-installed from Microsoft's site and it improved the situation.

DX updates are cummulative..
The older 'updates' are just re-written, they do not replace the newest updates.
Look at the DX folder, you'll see lots of files named by Months..

The DX 'downgrade' you speak of can't have happened :)
