CTR True MPG?

Whilst I can think of worse cars than a Civic Type R for spending most of your time on the Motorway, the list isn't that huge. Seriously poor choice of car if 80% of your driving is on the Motorway.

The CTR is the sort of car that only makes sense if most of your driving is hoonage down your favourite roads. Because in normal day to day driving it's just annoying.

Why is that? Lack of torque?

6th Gear is no-where near long enough for motorway cruising... at 80mph youll be doing 4000rpm, which isnt exactly quiet or fuel efficient.

Ive been getting between 20 and 30 mpg depending on driving style so far out of mine.

I'm regularly getting 29mpg from my Fiat Coupe, and hit 30.2 last week which is very impressive considering I haven't really been trying very hard i.e. I'm keeping it at 85-90 on dual carriageway and being fairly relaxed through the B roads. Just like my MR2 Turbo it doesn't seem to reward very careful driving.

No offence but a) they are quite dated and b) they were never really designed with emissions in mind really.

What Coupe is it? 20v?

You say 80% of your drive is motorway but what sort of miles are you doing ? It's pretty pointless trying to suggest something that's more frugal if we don't know what you consider expensive. If your commute is only 5 miles a day then switching to something slightly more economical is going to make very little difference to your fuel bills.

I get about 300 miles to a tank (motorway driving) and about 200 to a tank for short journeys (My work place is about a 5 min drive)

And that's with AEM + BC spec 3 exhaust.

Thirsty cars are fun - are you guys petrol heads or accountants?? :)
I'm getting around 420 - 450 miles on a full tank in my vRS (Petrol).
Think it's a 55L tank.

I knew what I was getting into before purchase - I'm still not convinced by the diesel argument as it does cost so much more...

I regularly drive from Bristol to Aberystwyth in my CTR, which is probably about 30>40% M'way the rest twisty'ish A-roads. Everytime I have calculated MPG for the journey with sensible driving it works out at about 28mpg. Pretty poor imo.

And I would just echo the comments about M'way driving (in fact any long distance driving), this is really a poor choice. I've had mine for 3 years now and have grown up a bit in that time (28 in 3 days) so do much less hooning around... unfortunately its the only thing its good for. It just pains me to sell it as its never gone wrong.

I drove mine to Swansea and back in the same day. About 520 miles in total and I didn't find it uncomfortable or noisy. Well, apart from a couple of tunnels on the way.

I also drove it up to Scotland fully laden this year and last with the dogs and other half without issues. Also managed late 20's MPG hooning round Scottish b roads which was great.

This car just isn't a town car though. I hate driving in built up areas anyway as I grew up in the country and could mostly avoid build up areas via B roads however mpg in town is just rubbish and it's only in town where I find the car uncomnfortable. The clutch can be a bit snappy and rolling of the clutch without any power on to creep can be a bit kangarooey. and with power on it makes it even worse. That might be just my car though which is in dire need of a service this month.

Why is that? Lack of torque?

No, because the entire package is designed to be fun when you thrash it to death. All the power is above 6000rpm, below then it feels like a normal Civic. It's not very refined, the interior is cheap and crap because when you are flinging it around 90 degree right handers in the middle of nowhere at 8000rpm you just dont care.

So when you get on the Motorway its loud, uncomfortable, annoying, not very economical and generally just a complete nuisance.

It's a fun car for thrashing around your favourite road. If most of your driving doesn't involve this, buy another car. Seriously, because the talents of the Type-R will be wasted and you'll hardly ever experience them in order to make up for the significant shortcomings.

The newer one is more refined I think, but it's still a mass produced car masquerading as a limited edition. On the positive side the interior will come apart before the engine does.

VTECs are crap on motorways for fuel economy, especially if you like to sit at 80-90. The gearing is too short and they rev too high.

A CTR would be luxury compared to a S2000 on a motorway though :D
