Hi, a friend of mine contacted me tonight asking some advice about a problem he has since installing cubase 5. I have only just purchased my new PC and intend on buying cubase 5 too but this issue has left me a little concerned.

He is using an i5 machine with windows 7 64 bit. He also uses an emu soundcard (as do I - however I think his is the 1212 whereas I only have the 0404 at the minute).

There are beta 64 bit drivers on the emu site and my 0404 is working fine with VLC player, youtube, games etc...,

However, tonight my friend has said that since he installed cubase 5 the likes of VLC player, youtube etc.., have no sound. Spotify now says "there is a problem with your soundcard".

I advised him to uninstall and reinstall his emu drivers. Initially after this youtube etc.., were all working again however once he went back in to Cubase 5 that was the only program that sound would come from. Spotify had started working again but as soon as he went in to Cubase everything else stopped working!!!!

The confusing thing is that within Cubase 5 he says his soundcard is working fine

I'm officially confused (that isn't too surprising) and now has me thinking with the emu cards would I be better going for different software myself, other than Cubase if this can't be resolved.

Thanks for any advice.

I have everything cabled up from my 0404 and it would be ideal if this could be sorted. He text me earlier on this morning to say he is in work and his head is melted because he can only think of trying to get this resolved!!

I was hoping to get myself fixed up soon but this has put a spanner in the works

Oh and for me I had to uninstall my internal card in the bios to get my 0404 to work

Can you confirm your version of Cubase... do you mean SX 5 instead of Version 5 which is really really old now?

Also, what does devices say in Windows Control Panle?

I know my Cubase / Windows go a bit crazy when I switch on my POD X3 and Cubase is running. ASIO issues there. That messes about with Youtube and everything but nothing that cant be fixed in Cubase or Control Panel.

It is cubase sx5 and I'll need to check with my mate later to see what windows control panel says.....

Thanks for the response mate. It is doing my head in because I had hoped to get myself set up asap and now this sounds like a bit of a nightmare!!

I'm still on SX3, but the principle should be the same.

If SX3 is stable on 64 then you should be able to get it going OK.

(That said my current SX3 machine is back on XP 32 due to other software issues)

Drivers aside, how are you finding the Emu?

Aye, I have been using the 0404 for a few years and it has been fine. Patchmix was a bit daunting at first but my setup is relatively straightforward so I didn't have too many problems. I like the tech side of things but I just want to get playing!!!!

My old machine was a q6600, 4gb, xp machine - I moved over to this new machine and my 0404 is fine but I haven't tried Cubase yet. Hearing my mate have these issues in a similar setup to mine (we often work together....so his machine is my machine and my machine is mine :)) is driving me nuts too because I was wanting to get the DAW side of things sorted out myself this week.
