Cure for common cold found?

He's kinda got a point though. The companies that would produce such a vaccine would most likely be the ones producing the cold relief drugs as well. Whichever is more profitable will win.

If you've got a cure then the others become redundant and demand drops... ergo they're not so profitable. There is more than one drug company in existence, the idea that this wouldn't be produced because some companies make money from relieving the symptoms is ridiculous - it would be a hugely popular product if it worked well, someone would produce and distribute it - the demand is there.

Won't be seeing this for another 20-30 years even if it's possible. General rule with pharmaceutical companies, if don't make money they won't bother releasing it

Are you familiar with VCD's(big in other countries, not so much UK)? Or Betamax? Different kettle of fish maybe, but 2 prime examples of tech that got discontinued/ underfunded because the big boy company's saw it as competition to their idea, and had enough power and influence to seriously affect the public's perception and ruin the companies that produced them. Sure, they had their problems and weren't perfect. But that's not necessarily why the companies went bust.

I'm not saying that these ideas will never be profitable, but there is a serious likelihood that these big corporations have enough power to sway public interest and even investor interest away from these ideas. And it has happened before.

A rival VHS format has very little to do with this...

I'd like an example of when you think this has happened before though - when a discovery made in academia that could cure a disease affecting most of the planet somehow gets suppressed in a global conspiracy... Tis very far fetched... such a cure is too big for someone to not develop it if viable - global drug companies aren't all part of a big conspiracy, they do compete with each other.

The idea that somehow a bunch of rival drugs companies would seek to suppress something plenty of them have no interest in suppressing (not all of them make money from selling cold relief products) is about as ridiculous as the idea that global oil companies are secretly suppressing cold fusion or perpetual motion tech....

With the amount of profit made in the pharmaceutical industry it makes me wonder what they can actually cure and what they won't due to massive losses.

Dons my tinfoil hat.

There is little sense in holding back a cure.

If company A develops a cure for the cold, it's going to release it because if it doesn't, company B might also develop a cure and get it on the market first.

Plus, there will always be things to develop cures for. Its not like these companies only have one revenue stream.

Finding cures for stuff isn't helping in creating the inevitable Zombie apocolypse.

We need more misguided tinkering with DNA or fund more GCSE viral warfare classes for muslims.
At this rate I'll be dying in my bed from boredom.

I wish that was a course at school, sounds more interesting than home economics:D
