What are the current best choices for 10" android tablets that are cheaper than an iPad 2?

My sister is thinking of a tablet and likes my Nexus, but also likes the iPad. What is there in the 10" android tablet market? It needs to be cheaper than an iPad 2 or she will just get one of them.

All I really know about is the Samsung Tab 2 10.1. The Note 10.1 is too expensive isn't it?

tf300 is jellybean with only a light skinning. I like it.

Not much to choose between that and my nexus except the size, keyboard and the screen is more responsive on my tf300.

edit:Sorry, I missed the part where you said "cheaper than ipad2"

Nexus 7 is the only Android tablet worth purchasing IMO - the others have terrible screens or are just massively overpriced (transformer prime). If she wants 10" a cheap iPad 2 may not be a terrible idea.

Is the Tab 2 10.1 that bad? I know its not new any more but she won't be hammering it, and an iPad 2 is hardly ground breaking.

the Prime is £360 on the forest...not a bad deal.

I had a Tab 2 10.1 for about four days before I got a refund and bought a Nexus 7.

The Tab 2, while having a nice screen, was plasticy, felt flimsy and didn't feel like it would last very long with regular use. I found that the screen was not always responsive to your touches. Sometimes during scrolling in the browser it wouldn't register your swipe halfway through, and would mistakenly think you'd double tapped to zoom.

The worst part was the UI was very stuttery, not smooth at all. Even without any widgets in use and nothing else running.

I certainly wouldn't recommend the Tab 2 from my experience.

ETA: I have a GS3 which uses the same materials as the Tab 2, but still remains feeling solid and well built unlike the Tab 2.

Half the reason I got a refund on the Tab 2, other than the reasons mentioned above, was that the screen wasn't mounted straight in the case, it was mounted off axis. Very noticeable with a white bezel.

TF300.

£399, Tegra 3 quad core, 1 Gb RAM, Jellybean, Keyboard, 32Gb on board storage plus SD+Micro SD. The screen on this is very good. As mentioned above, better than Nexus 7. (which is perhaps to be expected given it costs twice as much).

I'd say that represents good value for money.

TBF, the Iconia A210 has almost the same specs (but no keyboard, 16 instead of 32Gb internal storage, and a weaker battery) but can be grabbed for around half the price...

It also rocks a full-sized USB port so you can connect external storage devices.

(Should update to Jelly Bean soon we're led to believe)

While I understand all that, it will mean nothing to my sister. The first thing she asked when she had a go on my Nexus was "do you have Angry Birds?"

You can also get an iPad2 for less than £400, so fails my (well, not mine, my sisters) criteria.

Well I did acknowledge that earlier, the post was a reply to Rimsy regarding VFM.

Strumpusplunket also pointed out what seems possibly better VFM.

My personal choice is edging towards a rooted\custom rom'd B&N Nook HD(+) when they come out (I currently have a iPad 2, which I'm getting the missus to buy the Nook for me, and she can have that.)

The screen is meant to be fantastic, good battery life, MicroSD. For me it ticks all the boxes, and for the 32Gb 9" one it's looking to be £269? I'm getting mine in the states at Christmas, so it'll be £220 w/ case I believe.

Yeah I know, wasn't a dig. Just saying that I wont be able to convince my sister its good value because none of the tech stats will mean anything to her.

All she will see is something like an iPad 2, but more expensive.

Wimin, ey

I think it's hard to go wrong with an ipad 2. Perhaps not as versatile as the tf300 but would probably be a better bet for your average female. (forgive the sexist stereotype)

Not sure how the tf300 can be seen as good build quality. I went though two of them for one day each, both had marks on the screen between the lcd and touch panel. It wasnt dead pixels just marks coving up the screen.

Exchanged then refunded! waited a month and got nexus 7

Stereotype is 100% valid :D

The iPad2 is the logical 'just works' device (my other sister recently got one, hence this sister now wanting one). But she still thinks they are quite expensive (which they are) for a device just for browsing the web on the sofa, hence the Nexus idea.

I think I will tell her to get an iPad2 if she can stretch that far, or a Nexus 7 if she wants to spend less.

TF300 not particularly well built I agree. Nothing wrong with mine though.
Nothing wrong with my Nexus 7 either and lots of people complain about the build on those.

Interesting that you had issues with the quality of an Asus tablet and changed it for a cheaper Asus tablet. They're both good devices in my opinion.

I think the build is ok. I have a white one. Comapares quite favourably with the transformer Prime which has just won a T3 award. Nexus won an award also.
