As matt says, how about the older 7 series?

Nasty cars. I drove a couple recently and didn't rate them at all in comparison to the competition.
Try an Audi A8 instead. You will be impressed.

I find it difficult to imagine a situation where a 5 Series would not be big enough - perhaps if I wanted to carry 4 big, burley members of 'me crew' around in comfort, but other than that...

I've spent most of this week driving the E39 and trust me - you can't really say its 'not big enough', it's... quite huge.

I agree, the A8 is a beautiful car compared to the e65 7 Series.

Me, I'm more than happy with my "black beauty", such a pity about the newer 7 (the bloke next door to me has an e65 745i and he prefers the looks of mine!)

How on earth did BMW get the e65 so wrong in the styling dept? (imo) great to travel in, bad to look at. :(

isnt it about time BMW started using compact clutches and smaller bellhousings?

Their transmission tunnels are rediculously wide still...

:D

Hmm, never thought of that! your quite right, they are a bit big, that said, your hardly stuck for legroom in an e38 7 or, e39 5 I'm 6ft 3in and have lots of legroom. :)

My gripe is the way the wipers sweep from left to right, leaving a dirty corner of the screen that, to me, obstructs my vision! I get hacked off with calling into garages just to wash the screen although, I suppose we should all do that....

It's not about the size inside, it's about the wheelbase. A longer wheelbase gives a smoother ride.

I do disagree on your point about the E39 being huge inside. The space in the back is really quite poor compared to that of the 7 series, A8, Phaeton etc.

Agreed, my e38 both rides better and has a lot more space than the e39 , space in the back of the e39 is very poor, imo.

The day I care about space in the back is the day my passengers contribute to the cost of the car - space in the front, however ;)

my crew er.... ssh :D
but yeah, its human nature to always want bigger :D

more seriously a bigger car is just well... bigger, you have a better road presence, probbably more safe too and more room all round.

Then why not forget about an e39 and buy an e46 3 Series?

Is considerably better in the e38..... :p :D

My drivers seat is pretty far back, and there's still plenty of room for me to sit behind it in the back, can't say the same for the 3. The 7 does give more space in back, but it's mostly wasted imo.

Still, you pays your money and all that :)

It's slow and overpriced would be two :p

Overpriced, certainly, slow?

Power 500 bhp / 373 KW @ 5500 rpm
Torque 700 Nm / 516 ft lbs @ 4250 rpm
BHP/Liter 114 bhp / liter
Power to weight ratio 0.26 bhp / kg
Top Speed 300 km/h / 186 mph
0-60 mph Acceleration 5.4 s
I don't call that slow!
Source.
