Which banks currently don't require a card reader for online banking? I'm looking to move from Nationwide and that's one of the reasons. Feels like archaic technology and can be very inconvenient. I know Santander don't use them but which other banks are the same?

Lloyds and Barclays both allow me to operate my accounts from their apps without a reader. Barclays sent me a reader but it's still in the box.

/edit I think it might be a barclays premier thing, I seem to recall glancing over something about premier not needing pinsentry

Oh and HSBC as well.

None for Halifax. Awful bloody things they are.

Once went to help my grandmother buy a car, drove 2 hours and she couldn’t transfer the money because she didn’t have the reader on her.

You'd think places familiar with taking large transactions would have one or two knocking about just in case.

It was a fairly small trader not a big garage as such. I had to borrow money from someone else which took forever to come through typically lol.

Lloyds, Santander and Barclays don't require a card reader to access the online banking. My last Nationwide didn't require a card reader to access my online banking either so im suprised you do, have you tried registering?

My missus switched to Nationwide for the £200 bonus, I couldn’t believe it when a card reader came through the post. Seems such an outdated way of doing things.
However, think I’m going to switch for the £200 aswell and set up my Monzo straight away and just use that for transfers to get round the card reader.

Monzo, and HSBC are both card reader less.

This post was brought to your by Nationwides Social Media Team, did we mention the £200 bonus?…

You need the card reader to do transfers to new recipients, but not to log in to your account. It's a PITA so I just transfer money from N'wide to Santander and pay from there. I'm looking to switch but don't want to end up in the same position.

Most need a card reader initially - Barclays then don't need it post that for app use.

I use, HSBC, Santander, Natwest, TSB and Nationwide on my phone without needing a card reader for any of them.
