As the title says, does anyone have any idea what the current baggage rules are for flights coming into the UK?

I can find information for flights going out of the UK, passengers transitting through UK, but nothing passengers getting off at UK.

My flight's on 13th and I wanna know if I can take my mp3 player and a few books to read along or not considering the new rules etc. I'l probably call up the airline and ask in the morning, but just wondering if anyone here has heard anything about it by any chance.
Thanks

I've just come back from Germany with 40kg of electronic equipment, and a laptop bag full of cables, connectors and crap. Not a problem at all.

There was abit more security at immigration control (they seem to love my new French passport for some reason....) and at the "goods to declare" section - but I just go through the "blue" EU zone with my trolley full of equipment boxes without any incident. Then again I've been doing this for 6 years so they probably recognise me by now :p

Coming into the UK is fine - leaving the country is another thing all together. I saw the queues at security and basically it was a complete joke.

Any idea what the situation is like for someone flying into the UK and then straight through onto a flight to the states?

A bit re-assuring :) Although those rules may differ since i'm not coming in from an EU country. Finishing off a month's holiday in India :)

From what I read, pretty strict in those flights. No handbagge at all. Maximum you can take is a single transparent plastic bag with a few things like glasses (no cases), passport
wait a sec, lemme look for a link

found it

One fo the strictest thing is the no liquids policy. So can't take anything at all. Even baby food, or milk for the baby needs to be tested by someone :p

If you're doing a transfer you mean? Or actually leaving the airport complex and checking back in? They are 2 different situations.

I would have thought even a transfer would be subject to the OTTness at the moment.

Yup, a friend of mine was going to take a bottle of expressed breast milk with her on the plane over the weekend, so that she didn't have to breastfeed on the plane which is awkward. She was told that unless she was willing to drink some of it in front of security, she wouldn't be allowed to take it on board.

I think he means transfer, and yea, security is pretty much maximum with regards to that.

I came on a flight from auh-lgw at 6am, was totally normal, no restrictions out of the ordinary, apart from there bieng next to nil traffic at the aiport.

A direct transfer should be fine unless it to the US in which case you're not allowed anything as hand baggage and there a security check at boarding as well as the normal one.

In which case you will need to check in hand baggage whereever you start out from if you're hold baggage is being transfered

Yeah transfer, in my previous experience generally once you had cleared initial security you generally didn't see tough security again as you went gate to gate (there was the odd exception to this).

Ordinarily, yes, but from what I hear on the news, very very strict.

Are there any restrictions on the amount of cash one can carry out of the uk?

One million dollars!! mooohhahahahah. Erm sorry... I don't know, I reckon they would get a bit suspicious if you had several K in your pants....

Jokester, I think now depending on the airports and the destination despite clearing inital checks they will be somewhat anal about it all.... They get to boss people about they're not going to miss out on that chance ;)

I don't think there are any special restrictions cause of what's happened so just the usual ones.

usual depends on the country your travelling to, so you'l have to check, but it's usually a few thousand US $.
Restriction isn't on the money your carrying out, only on what you'r bringing into the country (any country) as far as i know.

i flew back from barcelona to manchester today and we had no problems taking hand luggage onto the plane.

they had a random search of my hand luggage as well as that of one of my friends, 2 of the other guys i went with weren't searched though.

this was with monarch airlines, don't know about other operators.

No, the UK abolished exchange controls ages ago, though this may not be true depending on where you're going and if it comes to light I'd expect questions to be asked if it's a substancial amount of cash
