Hello,

I'm posting this for a mate who hasn't yet registered.

He's about to buy a couple of SATA drives somewhere between 160GB-250GB each to build a medium sized RAID array and is considering the following:

Hitachi Deskstar
Samsung SpinPoint P
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9
Western Digital Caviar Special Edition

All are priced similarly.

He's discounted going for Maxtor drives as they seem to suffer reliability problems.

Just wondered if anyone could say which of these would be the best to go for and why?

Thanks a lot for replies :)

Im guessing everyone would say the Seagate 7200.10 drives they seem to be the best IMO.

Thanks, they seem to start at 200GB so I'll point my mate in their direction.

There seem to be different motors used in the 7200.10s and some are noisier than others. There may be some correlation to the colour of the insulation on them or to the factory the drives are assembled in but no-one's done a definitive survey yet. I can say that my two 400GB drives are very quiet, just clicking a bit when accessing.

I guess its just luck of the draw then as to which version of the Seagate you get?

What do you all think of the other drives on the list?

Hitachi Deskstar
Samsung SpinPoint P
Western Digital Caviar Special Edition
