Current CPUs for 1440p gaming

...But no my complaints go much further back than that - including the PR they did with Dice leading upto the 290 and Fury series launches where they were smearing nVidia and claiming nVidia wouldn't be able to catch up for 2 or more generations LOL... kind of ironic how things turned out.
You'd go toe to toe with an elephant with some of the things you're remembering. ;)

I'm not a fan of Intel hardware. I don't like AMD's history of running their mouth or hyping up products or tech they've subsequently under-delivered on or abandoned. Especially when they mock other companies but then don't produce themselves. (Also some history after they left a friend of mine holding the bag over some promotional stuff).

Some of Intel's latest stuff like the 9900 launch BS is pushing me towards having to flip a coin come next upgrade mind - their latest statement over the launch controversy is so far up their own behind it is unreal.

Agreed, all companies resort to marketing tactics to get sales. Most bend the truth, some so far it snaps ;)

It isn't just over-hype and other marketing tricks - I have a low tolerance for people/companies smearing/dissing the competition and then not delivering - Intel and nVidia have treated their customers with arguably more contempt and lies but generally they've delivered something tangible even if it falls a bit short of what they claimed - while there have been a number of cases where AMD have fallen flat on their face not just undelivered in combination with previously dissing the competition - it makes it very hard for me to spend my money their way but I won't recommend purchasing decissions to others to spend against their best interests over my personal disagreement with a company.

But also there are some other things - for instance burning an acquaintance of mine when they abandoned support for the open physics initiative.

It's a difficult one, sadly once one party go down the hype route what do the rest do. Most consumers do not research their purchases like some of us on here. Politicians use the same sound bite tactics. Until the man in the street stops responding to it I think we're stuck with it.

Luckily we have the internet, fellow enthusiasts and tech websites/You Tube channels to help reveal the truth. I don't mind a bit of hype but I don't like outright lies or dirty/illegal tactics.

Whilst AMD aren't perfect they're just not as bad as the competition but I can understand your personal beef with them.

I'm telling you Zen 2 is going to put Intel to bed.

Going to be an interesting one - if Intel can get their original 10nm on track they'll have an advantage as it is more tuned for CPU use versus the more general purpose nodes elsewhere but it appears like they will need EUV to achieve that which looks to be a little while off yet and if they slip back to something more in the range of 12nm they will have a hard time competing with AMD on a good 7nm node. Either way their intention of a 3 year march on the competition is gone and buried unless they've something to pull out the bag.

Intel was fined $1.5 billion for screwing over AMD illegally and Nvidia settled for a similar amount after Intel screwed them out of their chipset business.Things got so frosty between Intel and Nvidia,Nvidia started mocking Intel via cartoons. Then look at the whole BAPCo thing,ie,SYSMark which was essentially an Intel front for the most part, which meant AMD,Nvidia and VIA disavowed it after a few years.

AMD marketing......well its been self defeating a lot of times in the past, and that is why you should never believe PR bumpf from ANY company - wait for reviews, and go on from there.

Relax :) we moved past it.

Hopefully!!

Hi all,

Having severe decision paralysis on deciding on my CPU right now and would be grateful for some advice. I'm building a rig that will mostly be used for 1440p 27inch gaming (around £1100). I understand that GPU is the main factor here but I dont want to have to replace the CPU too soon as it begins to throttle the build. I am also aware that intel CPUs are a bit ridiculous right now but lets pretend they are back to their normal price.

The Intel 8400 was my original choice as it gives me a bit of saving where I could then maybe stretch to 1080. Worried though this may "throttle" the system a bit to soon, where the 8600k I can overclock (would probably mean a 1070 though)?

I would go for the AMD 2600 for even more savings but then I think that would need upgrading even before the 8400?

I have been planning this for a while and I cant be bothered to wait for the 9th generation to become realistic, so thought I'd stick 8th gen?

Thanks for any feedback.

OP,what games are you running??

I recently upgraded to a Ryzen 5 2600 after my old setup had niggles, and like in your situation I was also considering an Intel CPU(well the Core i7 8700 non-K) and prices all went a bit silly so gave up on the latter. I am running a GTX1080 and use a qHD display.

So far its not been too bad, although the only game I have tested so far is Fallout 4 which is by far one of the worst games for Ryzen, but its much smoother than my old Ivy Bridge setup(although its massively modded so has a huge amount of NPCs and a large number of draw calls which is above what you normally expect).

This seems to me to be really the only way to approach the situation; by about the ~10th review I read/see is when I start to think I might have an idea of how things really are. ;)

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £982.55 (includes shipping: £12.60)

I just bought that screen a few says ago, its a nice screen, it replaced an AOC G2460V

Its IPS tho i have to say while i think the colour accuracy probably is better on the new screen the colour looks a little muddy to me compared to the old TN panel, its probably just what i'm used to but i do have them running side by side and the whites on the old screen are noticeably a few shades more white.

Oh and its huge...

OP I went from a 970 to a 1080ti and my FPS more than doubled. My CPU usage is the same so like people said at 1440p your GPU is doing all the work

I too will be gaming at 1440p. Had intel cpu's for years.

For the first time going AMD my build this month will be:
2700x
X470 MSI pro carbon mobo
Team group 16gb 3200mhz Cas 14
