I've not really been keeping up with tablets since my nexus7 slowed to an unusable pace, but would like a decent/similar form factor tablet again, when I started looking again recently it was thought that the october event might promise a new equivalent, but that didn't happen - so what's decent at the moment
 
Have you tried a factory reset on your nexus 7? I've got the 2013 one and it's still pretty great, only six months removed from its last refresh.

Depends what you use it for, of course.

yeah, tried everything on it - it just got to the point on being unusable, even web browsing with updated software it was a nightmare, I even put it back to stock software )i.e. before the updates to android but most of the apps couldn't be used
 
My Nexus 7 (2013) is much slower these days. I don't know if it's related to Android M but it feels slower, for sure. I did try wiping the cache which helped for a while. And I've found reverting to the stock launcher helps make it feel snappier along with a reset of the device. I'm tempted to put Cyanogenmod on it although more out of interest than anything.

However it's now a backup family tablet for streaming as I bought an Nvidia Shield earlier this year. The Shield has been a fantastic device and has a few noticeable benefits over the Nexus 7 including less reported ones like it's headphone output which is much better. Brilliant for late night Netflix watching.

The shield is a great Nexus 7 replacement even if you're not a gamer. Software updates are fairly regular atm, although not monthly like my Nexus 6, and I'm not sure the Shield is going to get Android N. Battery life is OK (about 5 hrs screen time) but not stellar. Performance wise it is very fast and responsive though. Shame that it has gone up in price but unavoidable.

thanks for that info - I'm looking for one to use as a kind of casting device almost, got a couple of chromecasts set up in ceilings and on the tvs so should be up to that and a bit of browsing hopefully

mine slowed to near unusable and charging took forever thanks to the android 5 update.

i had a original 16gb one
 
Hoping this place will stock the k1 again, failing that there will likely be a new nvidia tablet out next year.. am in the same boat looking to replace the n7 (asus)

Ideally I'd like something akin to the K1 but without the tendency to get quite warm
 
We're looking to buy 20-30 tablets at work. Simple requirements: 4G connectivity, high-res screen, 7-9" screen, semi-decent internals. The Nexus 9 would've been ideal but it's not being sold anymore! Whenever you filter tablets with 4G connectivity the only real options you get are Samsung or iPads :/.
