Hi all. For those of us who missed the 30x0 and 6x00 cards in launch and still must buy a card (dead PCs, etc) where is the current value in the market?

Prices just seen weird, and I can't make heads nor tails of what's actually well priced. If you wanted decent 1080p, what would you get? What about 1440p?

Remember - this is the one thread where "just wait" isn't an option. Imagine your PC was hit by lightning, and you just NEED something NOW.

Second hand would be best value, but for new:

Presuming you don't need ultra high refresh. 1080p - RX 580 or 1650 Super (don't buy the none super it's garbage) - aim to not spend more than £150 - it's a bad time to buy as 580s were going for £120 before

1440p - 5700 > 5600 XT> 1660ti or 1660 Super - again prices should come down soon, really bad time to buy

Second hand:

1080p - 1060, 580, 570, 290 - aim for less than £100

1440p - Vega 56 or 64 or 1070 or 1070ti - aim for about £180
 
Prices will be high until stock for these cards stop being extremely limited, which you're looking probably at Q2 next year. If you want something right this moment and you're only targeting 1080p there's absolutely no reason to get a new video card unless you're after ray tracing performance, in which case maybe a 3070 would be OK. But if you don't care about ray tracing a second hand 2000 generation card would be a much cheaper way of getting stella 1080p performance.

It's no faster than an RX 580 and it costs more, hence I wouldn't go for it. Shopping around on the web you should be able to get an RX 580 for between £150-£160 (I can't give links as it's against site rules as overclockers). Overclockers don't seem to have any good offers right now.

The other tip is - Black Friday is around the corner, might be worth a wait and see if any amazing deals come then.

What monitor are you driving?

Currently 2, 1080p and a 1920x1200. Was thinking the 5500 might be quieter/cooler. It's apparently 50w lighter when heavily used. If I keep it a year, say 3 hours a day, thousand hours of use. That's £5/year. I have a bad habit of leaving things running... Enough that I'd pay a few pounds more for it?
 
There's nothing wrong with the 5500 and it does use less power, it's just a lot of money for what it is. They launched much higher than was expected. There's supposed to be a 5300 available soon, but given the current market, I'd be surprised if it was good value. RX 580 / 5500 are both getting borderline now though, even for 1080p (refresh needed at the low-end).

Yes it will be, but when you're spending the amount I reckon it's worth paying a few quid more and going for the 5600 XT because it's about 50% or so quicker and it will last you longer before you need to upgrade. Especially when the new consoles will probably make 1080p gaming more demanding. Your cash and your choice at the end of the day though mate.

I'd imagine if you check out deals site on Black Friday you'll be able to find one for £250.

That's the eternal problem - all the cards exist on a slope. Which was why my question was about best value points, rather than best cards?

From answers above, it's clear that 20x0 and 5700 do not exist at good value points - and I was considering them. It's just so muddy right now, waiting for sales..

In terms of pound per frame, I think by memory from hardware unboxed, it'll be something like:

580 (£150) > 5600 XT (£275) = 1660 Super (£200) - that maybe the best card for you as it's also power efficient and faster than the 580 or 5500 XT

Only 9 days till Black Friday, if you can wait. Either way I think any of the above cards would suit you well from a value perspective, what card are you coming from?

Oh, I'm waiting! I'm also weirdly in the market for two cards. One for me (budget flexible), one for a present for a relative (long story) but a fixed budget of 250-300. Hence not focusing on just one price point.

I'm coming from a 7850 now (but was a 570 before hit by lightning). Relative coming from a converted office potato. So big updates either way.
 
If you "need" a GPU I would have a look at places like CEX or ebay (or MM). The mega value is probably in something like a 2GB 6950/7850 or 560ti for like £25. Can probably squeeze in low settings 1080p gaming.

So an RX 570 has just died and you're running on a back up 7850? If that's the case how's the 7850 going? I'd imagine it'll still run 1080p at medium or low settings.

And is that 300 for both cards or 300 each? If it's for both I'd imagine

I'd predict that when the 6700, 6600 and 6500 come out, that the 5700 and 5600 ti will be flogged off at lower prices. IE sub £200. But you'll probably be waiting 6 months for that to happen.

Also another option is Overclockers B Cards (which are usually just returns they can no longer sell as new), if you offered £180 for this, they'll probably drop it to £180-£220

Asking can't hurt. I managed to get a Vega 56 for £180 from them. Just make sure you test the card within the 7 days return period.

It's like pulling teeth. I'm down to 30fps, trading off detail down to ugly or both. Worse, it's a borrowed card. I have a month or two, but that's it. The relatives card is a Christmas present.

And is that 300 for both cards or 300 each? If it's for both I'd imagine

Nope, separate budget. The relatives card is a budget contributed by wider family. My personal budget is up to 800... if I can persuade myself it's actual value. And that value bit is hard.

IE sub £200. But you'll probably be waiting 6 months for that to happen.

I had forgotten that was even a thing. Gift card has to be new. My card though... mine I'm much more flexible with.
