I've been out of the game for a while and my current CPU is an Opteron 146 @ 2.8Ghz.

What's the current overclocking king? Intel or AMD

E6300 is the way for you then. It is the cheapest of the dual core Conroes and can be clocked to outperform an FX-60. Do a search for E6300 and see piles of people fawning over them.
