Current thinking for 1st DSLR?

I use a Sigma 105mm macro for close up work and have found it to be very good and is also available in most fitments. If sheer image quality is important there are of course the various Canon 'L' lenses and Nikon equivelents.
Perhaps avoid 4/3 cameras with smaller chips.
