"Have you seen Paul Allen?"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WdEL8DzvaM

Patrick Bateman: Do you like Huey Lewis and The News?
Paul Allen: They're OK.
Patrick Bateman: Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
Paul Allen: Hey Halberstram.
Patrick Bateman: Yes, Allen?
Paul Allen: Why are their copies of the style section all over the place, d-do you have a dog? A little chow or something?
Patrick Bateman: No, Allen.
Paul Allen: Is that a rain coat?
Patrick Bateman: Yes it is!

Ha! I always think of Pat Bateman whenever anyone mentions Paul Allen! :D

Because he can?

Thats like saying to Jay Leno why he needs to have to own a huge garage, and own a 4+ page list of cars

Rich people like to live rich, they would make the money back off interest and further income in no time
No comparison. Leno restores motor vehicles as a hobby. He just has sufficient money to get good cars and restore them properly. He has no problem giving rides to people, showing them, or talking to people (with great knowledge) about them.

What kind of hobby would you have with a yacht? Smoking 'gars and drinking vintage wines? It's just a big finger gesture to the kids that picked on him in school. Nothing more. A complete waste of money that could be much better spent educating the poor.

Been on it a few times in my old job - was most impressive, didn't like the decor as much as LGB or Pelorus but still a rather impressive vessel. Larry Ellison's yachts are rather spectacular too, Rising Sun is a heck of beast, not very attractive in my eyes,.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the appeal of private yachts?
nope, your not. they all look amazing, but in the real world they're a mahoosive waste of money. $750,000 for a full tank of fuel and $384,000 to run per week is ridiculous no matter how much you earn

for that kind of money i could get a mansion with my own private racetrack and a very full garage

You're missing the point, he can do both and still have change from the income from his investments let alone touch his capital.

I would buy the Yacht and use it for about a year or two, then sell it, just to say "yeh I owned one"

Why not :)

I probably wouldnt buy one THAT big though, its huge, aslong as I had enough room to land a helicopter on, and a door I could open at the back to release my Speed boat and Jet Ski's, and a platform so I could roll back in to the sea in my scuba gear, id be happy.
