Custom build Corsair AX860 PSU "click" no power

Hi
I have just built a custom machine
Motherboard is a Z77X-UD5H, PSU is a Corsair AX860
Both are supposedly brand new items.

When the power is connected, I get the power LED light up on the motherboard, but when pressing "On" I get a single click from the PSU and that's it, no fans spin up and the machine doesn't boot.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can test which is at fault? I'm guessing the M/B wouldn't light up if that was at fault?
The power cables are modular and the wires are all black so am unable to see actual wire colours to do the "paper clip test" which I've seen online

I'd suggest unplugging everything possible bar the EPS and 24pin to the motherboard, see what kind of results you get then.

Ah certain models only run the fan when needed, have you connected a fan to one of the molex leads, this also provides a little load for the PSU.
 
I have tried the following combos:
12v ESP and 24pin = does not turn on
12v ESP = does not turn on
12v ESP and 24pin and CPU fan = does not turn on
12v ESP and CPU fan = does not turn on
all of the above with 1 memory stick = does not turn on
nothing connected apart from a paper clip in pins 15 & 16 = does not turn on

a single "click" is heard in all scenarios.
 
Looking at your list above, have you tried with just a fan connected to the molex and link out pins 15 & 16 and nothing connected to the motherboard.

I found a fan with a molex (and the fan has LEDS in it!)

So, upon "turning it on" the LEDs flash on then off and the PSU clicks as it has done previously.

Nice one (I assume the fan tried to spin at the same time) do you have the possibility of testing another PSU with your system?

As doing the paper clip with just the fan connected does appear the PSU has issues (stating the obvious I know :D) as mentioned earlier advanced psu's only turns on the cooling fan when needed or a certain load is reached.
 
I don't have another PSU unfortunately as this was a new build...

I've just used a multimeter against pins 15 & 16 on setting V20 and it read 2.13 which as I understand it is just over 2Volts, far less than the supposed 12V it should be pushing out?
 
It sounds like the short circuit protection kicking in. Is the motherboard shorting to the case? there might be an extra stand off that is shorting out the motherboard.

This test was just PSU with the cable into multimeter. No other devices attached.

When I have got it connected to the m/b, where could it be shorting?

I also tried with just a fan connected and no m/b same result

When fitting the brass stand off's inside the case, I think normally there are 9 for an ATX board it is sometimes possible that the motherboard doesn't use all 9 i.e it only requires 8 and the ninth would cause a short on the underside of the board.

If you have the board disconnected try connecting additional fans/hard drives to load the PSU a bit more, usually it needs to see a minimum load before it will switch on.
