Custom Build Opinion Thoughts Before Purchase Please

Hi,

Thanks guys. I would like the new processor from Intel as I already have the 2600 i7 and 2630 (laptop processor) - I don't want to be moving backwards?

Also would 1 x 6990 be better than 2 x 6870 or 2 x 6970? I really don't want to overkill here, I would run the monitor at 1200.

Yes I own UA?

Cheers

as jpod so eloquently put it you don't need to go with sb-e

the i2500k is ahead of the i2600 laptop cpu so you wouldn't be going backwards, unless you need the extra cores/hyper threading then i2600k/i2700k and sb-e are NOT needed even for future proofing as the i2500k will last you for a good few years by which time something much better than sb-e will be out.

do you HAVE to buy 2x graphics cards NOW? if you're looking at the 6990/ 6970 xfire(i.e. £500-£600) then wait for the 7970 which is due out on the 9th as its similar performance to the 6990 but £100-£200 cheaper @£400-£450 rather than £500-£600). then in the near future you can add a 2nd 7970.

I'm sure I'm just banging my head against a brick wall and you'll go with WHAT YOU WANT rather than listening to the advice given but 1 last try wouldn't hurt.

Fowler002 - Thanks for the post. Although I am a little disheartened that you think your efforts are wasted and/or won't be taken on board.

Having said that, I do have the i7 2600 desktop which is more powerful than the i5 which was my point, the other is my laptop which has the i7 2630qm (I think). The new CPU's score a lot better than my current desktop and so that is my reasoning there, yes its expensive but I can get much more out of it performance wise, especially once overclocked.

However, I am in total agreement with your comment with regards the graphics card. It does make sense to wait for the new 7970 (I am looking at building it in 1 - 2 weeks anyway) and perhaps add another at a later date. My concern is the noise and heat these cards (ATI) produce compared to the Nividia eqivalents?

Thanks in advance.

Reveiw on the new 7970, temperature/consumption/noise levels.

However you might just be better getting something Nvidia have to offer, better drivers imho.

If you believe you will utilise the SB-E then who are we to argue with you! You know what you want and if you can afford it, GET IT!

Obviously wait for the new cards.

I am just very impatient (loading times) and want the best - whats wrong with that?

Why have a car which drives upto 200 mph, when the UK max speed limit is 70 mph (except when overtaking for 10 seconds @ 80 MPH on the motorway)? Its not nessesarily being able to drive 200 mph but rather how quickly (reaching 70 mph), smoothly and enjoyable to you drive at 70 mph.

Kind of a pointless post really ipod.

Okay if were making a serious gaming machine, that can surf the tinternet and play 1900x1200 (a bit like my laptop) what about Intel Xeon X5680, two obviously.

What do you think Mr Fowler?

It's got to load fast so I am thinking SDD in RAID and I am guessing a wired rather than a wireless keyboard.

What's the budget OP?

It's got to be able to store like all the SITC in HD, SJP looks her best in hidef

I would perhaps put a £2,000 - £2,500 budget forward this should get a decent system. I am drawing a line on some parts though - those which offer little benefit but cost hundreds more than the model down.

I will get my head on this next week which will be when I am ready to order. My OCZ Agility 3 keeps crashing and so I will be getting some M4's first (the OCZ is the worse possible drive I have ever used in my life - yes its fast but so unreliable).
