Hi guys,

I don't know if anyone is interested or not in custom IEM's but I thought I would share my experiences with a company I visited on Saturday called Cosmic Ears. If you can't be bothered to read it all I will say it's going to be very positive. :)

Now before we start I have no connection with the company, I don't know anyone who works there and I'm using my own money to buy these. For me this is a big investment and not something I do lightly.

I've been looking for a replacement set of IEM's for a little while now and was going to buy a set of Fidue A83's to take the place of my RHA MA750's, until someone mentioned that I should look at a set custom's from Cosmic Ears. After looking on their website I knew it was going to cost quite a bit more so I sent a few emails to CE (Cosmic Ears) regarding general information and the buying process. Phil contacted me and gave me details regarding different models over a few emails and also asked Amelia to contact me to provide information on the buying process, which she did and it helped to make everything clear. The communication was prompt, detailed and really helpful. Well done CE and a great start.

On Friday of last week I contacted Amelia by phone on the possibility of visiting the office to discuss options, maybe demo a set and have some impressions taken. I'd previously phoned round a few companies for impressions and had been quoted a range of costs including £29 from Specsavers, £40 at a local audiologists and a whopping £100 from Boots. I drove over to the office on Saturday afternoon and was met by Phil. Now I'm not sure if this is the usual service that CE offer or if it had been arranged specifically for me, but Phil made me feel very welcome. I sat down and had my impressions taken immediately by a professionally trained audiologist which was an easy and smooth process.

So we sat together and Phil explained the 3 models I had in front of me. He'd provided 3, 4 and 6 driver versions with universal fit tips and explained that the sound would only be 85-90% of the final version as the fit will make a big difference. He recommended that I tried the models with increasing driver numbers and that I should make my own mind up as to which one I preferred. Once I'd done that he would go in to more detail about them as he didn't want to cloud my judgement. So I plugged the CE3P in to my DX90 that I'd taken along and started to pick lots of different songs, the clarity was amazing and so much better than I was expecting. Once I felt I'd got a grasp of the 3 I moved on to the next set and so on, with each model increase there was a significant change in the sound as expected but I was surprised by the differences. Now I'm no audio specialist, not a sound engineer, cannot pick out peaks at certain frequencies as some people claim to be able to and I struggle to describe sound. With that in mind I will say there was a increase in detail, clarity and fullness to the sound which made me think I have to have the top spec model. At no point did Phil interrupt me or make me feel uncomfortable that I was taking up too much of his time. I will say that they paired up beautifully with the DX90 and I was surprised by the richness of the bass. All along I thought I would need the B (bass) version, but to I have to say the P (pro) was spot on. The bass was crisp and clear and did not bleed in to any other frequencies. One thing that I really didn't expect was that they were the most comfortable earphones I'd tried and they were just universal fits, if the custom fits are better I will be very happy.

Once I'd finished my demo Phil left his office to come and sit with me again. We discussed my thoughts on each model and Phil asked which one I thought I might be interested in. I explained it had to be the 5 or 6 driver version as I loved the level of detail. We now spent a great amount of time as he explained the drivers and the differences between dynamic and balanced armatures. He was also able to show me the sound graph's from the many different IEM's I'd been interested in. They had all been tested on their own bespoke testing equipment and therefore a direct comparison could be made. He explained the pluses and minuses for each set and at no point did he criticise other makes or try to make out CE was the best. A refreshing change for someone to have confidence in their own product to be able sell itself without having to put down another company to make theirs seem better. He then went on to show me the various colours, designs and custom options available. The great start was not a fluke and I knew I'd made a good choice.

So we'd decided it was going to be a 5 or 6 driver version, Phil showed me the graph's of the two, explained the differences between their sound signatures and based on my tastes he said either would fit me very well. To my further surprise, he then said that he wasn't happy about me ordering the 5 without having listened to one and apologised that a set wasn't available for me to test there and then. He said a demo model would be ready in a couple of days and would ship it out to me straight away for testing. 'Wow, this guy really stands by his products and wants everyone to be happy' I thought. So after having a great afternoon (probably near to 3 hours of his very valuable time) Phil was happy to shake my hand, thank me for coming over to see them and let me go without having spent a penny. Their level of service started really well and it would have been very easy for it to tail off but to my surprise it got better at each stage.

I feel the problem with most forums is that many people visit them to complain about something and rarely visit them to offer praise, I think it's human nature to complain especially from behind the safety of a keyboard. I think credit should be given where it's due and for their excellent customer service, concern for their customers and quality of their products Cosmic Ears cannot be praised highly enough. I will be ordering a set of custom IEMS from CE this week and I cannot wait to get them in my hands.

I just thought I would pass on my comments as these are quite an investment for anyone. It's not as though you can easily buy a set and then chuck them away for another set if you don't like them. At this price it's quite a step to take so I thought people might like to know how you would be treated if you did make the same decision I have.

If anyone is interested I'll update this thread when they arrive. Also there's a long thread on Headfi about Cosmic Ears where I posted this as well.

Please do keep us updated - Ive been drooling over custom IEMs since I got into them, so I'm very interested in what you have to say.

Very nice write up and it's refreshing to see such excellent customer care, something of a rarity these days.

While expensive, they are still not as expensive as I was expecting, not for customs and the difference in cost between the 5 and 6 is only £50.

The main thing that has stopped me taking the custom route is the cost but if you've got it then good luck to you. The other thing is that customs are only generally a good fit for two years because the ears are constantly changing - so I hope they have a reasonably priced re-shelling service.

cost has always put me off

I really want to like iem's but i don't no matter what i try they annoy me after a while I'm sure customs are the solution to that but spending that sort of money to find out :/

Anyway nice write up :) let us know how you get on with them in the coming months.

I'm happy to offer any information I can. The company is growing really well as far as I am aware and they keep signing up bands to produce IEMs for them, like Rudimental for example.

The equipment they use is all state of the art and they seem to be doing things other manufacturers aren't to try and get as good a sound signature as possible.

I'm hoping they'll last me a few more years than that, but as you say you never know depending on how your ears change. They do offer a re-shelling service as they had re-shelled other manufacturers IEMs to custom ones for customers. Apparently they have some fancy wax technique during manufacturing to provide a better and more comfortable seal.

Happy to give my thoughts when they arrive. :)

Well that's why they only offer a service to keep your impressions on file for two years, after that you would need to have new ones.

I have to be honest and say the cost was the biggest stumbling block for me as well. It's taken a lot to stump up the cash as there are lots of things you can spend that kind of money on.

I like to have quality in ears and usually spend around the £100, but as you say they always start to annoy me after an hour or two, my ears start to hurt or get sweaty and itchy. I'm hoping that customs really will make a massive difference and I'm expecting them to feel a little weird at first. Also there always seems to be some sort of compromise to getting a decent sound out of an in ear. You get a decent low bass but it clouds the mid bass and is lacking in the highs. You can't get a decent seal and so the bass disappears completely. You get an alright bass, a bright top end and mids like someone is singing with a bag over their head. You get the idea. :)

These have 6 drivers each dealing with a set amount of frequency all working together. Phil showed me the phase of the set I was interested in and it was clear they were all working together really well. Compare that to some of the others I saw and you would be amazed at what some people think sound good. Like I said I'm no expert but it's clear when you see a graph where there is a 9db spike in one frequency with a -6db trough right after with the phase all over the shop things are not going to sound good. I saw the graph of my current set and as soon as I saw it I realised why they just didn't sound right and I was after something with more clarity. :)

Sounds like they know how to take care of their customers.

I've actually been looking at their CE6P as it's not too crazily priced for their flagship model. Might have to give them some more serious thought...

yes supa koopa i know exactly what you mean about the itchy annoying feeling after a couple of hours.

I will have to consider it as a reeal option at a later date far too many things i need to invest in over the next year

Like furnishing my man cave :D

Oh and a wedding lol

Well since rids57 got my brain ticking away about the ear fit thing, I've been in touch with the company for a bit more information. As usual they have been quick to respond and helpful.

They say that the 2 years estimate is more of a general rule of thumb and Phil has been using his current set for over 3 years with no problem. Previous customers have had them for 4 or 5 years without complaint, and they have not yet had anyone come back to them over fit problems with ears changing.

That said, if you do experience some fit problems you can send them back to them and they can make minor adjustments to alter the fit rather than having a full re-shell.

It's actually put my mind at ease after ordering the flagships and there's no reason now not to get your hands in your pockets...! :)

That's good news, it makes me think that other custom manufacturers were just covering themselves for the cases where the fit does change appreciably. I wonder if it's an age thing? Maybe the change is greater in youngsters than it is in old farts like me? :D

Let's hope so as I'm no spring chicken. :)

It's also a good excuse to not go on a diet, ' Sorry sweetheart I can't lose any weight otherwise my earphones won't fit'. :D

Well I thought I would post an update to my custom monitors I ordered. They arrived a week ago now and I've been really happy with them. I realise these are very expensive but compared to other custom in ear stuff they are actually very reasonable. The sound to me is really good with a perfect balance and full richness. The more I listen to them the better they sound as my brain adjust to them. The fit is perfect, they have a fantastic seal and really reduce external noise. I'm now listening to everything at a much lower volume than before. If you were thinking of trying custom monitors I can't recommend Cosmic Ears enough.

I'm sorry to say I don't have a photo page thingy so can't upload images. Here's a link to them on headfi (I hope linking to this site doesn't break any rules)

They look really good, that clock face is stunning. As for the sound, I am already using my RHA MA750's (through an Aune T1 on unity gain) in preference to my HD650s and K702s, so I would expect these to sound incredible.

Thanks Rids57, a few people have commented on the clockface. :)

They really are sounding better and better. I'm not one for burn-in, especially on balanced armature drivers, I think it's just a case of brain-burn-in as I get more used to them.

The fit is excellent and they did feel a bit weird for the first few days until I got used to them, but now they are really comfortable.

I can't honestly say they are worth every penny as the cost really is quite ridculous for earphones (I'll say it again thought they are not expensive for customs) but I certainly don't regret it like I do with most of my purchases.

The Ibasso DX90 and CE6P's really are an excellent match and one I'm happy to have. I won't be changing anything in a long while. :)

Yeah, I thought I was done buying audio gear and oooops - idly reading a thread on HeadFi last night, followed a link and before I could back out I'd bought a pair of Fidue A73s :D
