Custom Made Intercoolers!?

You sure you can't find one to fit?

An afternoon in a scrappy with a tape measure could save you several hundred quid...

Actually - there's a list of OEM IC sizes and capacities...Hmmm...I'll look around.

Thanks Penski. Its for a TD though, and by FMIC i mean a chunky 9 litre jobby behind the front grill, not a pap one shoved up in the wheel arch that gets about as much air as a dead rat in a sealed plastic bag!

Look at volvos, trucks, Saabs and their ilk.

Lots of the 200SX guys go for Saab and Volvo FMIC's as upgrades when running higher power as an upgrade to their WMIC (Wing Mount InterCooler)

Would I then just get some custom hoses!?

I would like an all alloy one really.

Penski, any chance of this list you speak of or not? Would a any FMIC fit if brackets were made, etc, and hoses made up!? I guess i'd have to approach Saab dealers for prices, but what models should I look for? 95 Aero HOT, etc?

Thanks

No need to go to dealers - why bother when you can find plenty in scrap yards.

My understanding is Saabs and Volvo coolers are not considered as good as dedicated new kit ones. Before the 200sx supplier started doing them in bulk, some people sourced Lancer Evos for a decent 2nd hand units. You dont save much going DIY these days so I havent heard much lately on this.

what pressure are you running? would I be right in assuming this is for bling rather than a need to get charge temps down on a diesel? you do know an overly big intercooler will just give you more lag?

Yer, its for the MG CDTi. Its just to help with the increase in boost really. Although having looked, there really isnt a hell of a lot of room, it would have to be mounted directly behind the lower grill. I think a 9 litre is well out of the question!

something off a TD van would probably do the trick if its for genuine cooling :) I have a couple of contacts at work that would make you a custom intercooler, they'd probably want your old one and just make a new one the same dimensions so its easy to mount, just twice the thickness core or something.

Have you tried Allard? They mainly churn out 4x4 intercoolers, but I vaguely remember someone getting a custom one made. They might be able to point you in the right direction.

Thats the thing, i'd like one shoved behind the grill though as t'would look nice, plus have the benefit of more cool air getting to it!

Come on, dont make me mount one on top of the engine....

Oh wait.....do.....then i can get my bonnet scoop i've always dreamed of! :D

how about a cosworth intercooler? just fitted mine today to my pug
