A rare night off work has given me time to ponder one of life's great questions. Which of these two eminent tomes gets your hard-earned every month?

Personally, I subscribe to Custom PC and buy PC Format off the shelf every month but lord knows why. Considering the cover price of £5.99 the mag is a journalistic featherweight. Its heavy on wit and light on content. The GPU head to head this month is a joke. At least when Custom PC do a head to head they go all out and bring in a vast array of hardware for the reader to consider.

So what y'all think?

I dont buy PC mags anymore. I used to buy them till about 4 years ago. Better up to the date info on the net. Only magazines I buy are New Scientist and Astronomy now. Oh, and the Viz . . . . :D

I dont really buy PC magazines but when I do Im normally drawn to custom PC. I like the way PC format lures you in with a pretty girl holding a graphics card though.

Used to buy PC Format. No idea why, I knew all the stuff they talked about, progs they bigged up etc. Must have been the "pretty girl holding a graphics card" thing though! :p

Interestingly my local Morrisons no longer stock PC Format. I was so seriously worried that they'd gone out of business until I checked their site! :D

As for why? PC Format just seemed more general than Custom PC. Am I right in saying Custom PC was more about overclocking PCs and pimping them up? Whereas PC Format was more about games, tweaks and new hardware and reviews of motherboards/processors/graphics cards etc and which ones were the best to buy on a budget or with loads to spend?

buy custom pc sometimes.......its just a good toilet read really.
they cant be taken too seriously though......

Last time i looked at PC format is wasnt far off 7 quid. Same for custom PC.

When i got my 1st creative DVD rom i got these mags for the cover discs but nowadays the interent is the place to get info, not these mags

True. The price of PC Format got a bit silly for me. And like you say I can download 100% of the DVD stuff and when it comes to drivers etc I can get newer ones online compared to the outdated drivers on the DVD.

So more and more expensive yet easier to get newer stuff online.

i dont really read any of the store publications. If i need to know anything about hot hardware, how to do this that and the other, release dates etc... then google is my best friend. The information is easy to come by, has a great wealth of information readily available and best of all, Its free.

PC mags are going the same way that the Amiga mags went. They get thinner and thinner due to lost advertisers, then the price goes up and then they start printing on cheaper paper to keep costs down, then they stop publishing. The only time I buy them is when I go on holiday, out of the 2 I prefer CustomPC.

Custom PC if anything, but I reckon this months issue will have a 'preview of ATI's new 48xx series cards' or something old school like that. I'd probably be interested in a magazine that read something like 'vmod your old GPU til it pops' or something similar...

Custom PC is a good read on a flight (if you've forgotten a boox or some work to do)

Shame i had the thing read in 40 mins :( (was only half way back to luton)

Ah well pc magazines are over rated given we all have broadband

Never buy pc magazines, all the latest info is available on the net, and if i have a problem i can go on a forum and get answers quickly from peeps who maybe experieced the same issues, and get solutions quickly.

Not bought PC Format for many years now. Occasionally buy Custom PC, tends to be on a whim when in the supermarket. Thought about getting the subscription cause it's pretty cheap that way but it's vastly overpriced when bought in a shop/newsagents.

Tend to have read all the stuff online first anyway.

I take the money I would have spent on the magazine, then I got spend it on ale. MUCH better investment. Back a few years ago I did buy micro mart and Custom PC, but now I just read it up on-line.
