Hi there I have seen this media player model on overclockers

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-003-OK

However I am only looking to pay around £500 so what I am probably going to do is build the thing from scratch and ask for your help on substituting some of the parts for cheaper ones as the spec above is overkill for what I need. I run everything through a reciever so the media center should be able to connect to my amp via a HDMI port. I notice the motherboard on that machine doesnt have HDMI either. I will also need the media center to be able to play blue ray films so would like to keep the blue ray player.

Can someone fairly knowledgable help me out here.

The spec is as follows

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz Quad Core Processor
- Asus P5E-VM Intel G35 "PCI-Express" (Socket 775) DDR2 Motherboard
- Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC6400 Dual Channel Memory Kit
- 1000GB Hitachi Deskstar 16MB Cache SATA-2 Hard Drive
- LG GGW-H20L Blu-Ray Rewriter & HD-DVD ROM Serial ATA Drive
- Creative Extreme Audio 7.1CH Sound Card
- 10/100 LAN
- Antec Fusion Media Centre Case
- Antec NeoHE 430W ATX Power Supply
- Netgear WG311 54Mbps Wireless PCI Network Card
- Front & Rear Firewire IEEE1394 Connectors
- Front & Rear USB2.0 Ports
- Front Headphone & Microphone Ports

Many Thanks for any help!

You can certainly ditch the quad core processor for a start, even the lowest spec core 2 will be fine for media playback. RAM wise, 2 GB should be plenty and you can find a cheaper motherboard as well. I recommend ditching the onboard stuff alltogether and looking at the new Radeon 4550 which is perfect for a HTPC.

Thanks Jimmy can you reccomend a motherboard model and a processor that will handle blueray playback?

a cheapy ati card (my 2400XT) can take the load of decoding blu ray and HD-DVD. no need to have a cpu do it.

OK so far I've got this. I really do hope that chip is good enough for blueray playback!
