right, well after trying and loving double edged safety razors i'm tempted to take the next step and get my self an insanely dangerious bit of shaving kit :)

I'm not overly flush at the moment so what would people recomend as a good introductory cutthroat?

Cheers
Sam

You want to get a solid blade one, and a proper cowhide leather sharpening belt. It takes a bit of practice and can be a bit daunting at first, especially when shaving around the neck area. However once you've mastered it, you won't get a better shave. I've said before, I'm going to treat myself to a new one as mine was confiscated by airport security

Dovo make really nice blades.

I have also been tempted, but would probably injure myself regularly!

thats what i thought about the safety razor, but its totally fine, and i'm really enjoying the more sedate ritual of it, so fancy stepping up and going for the next level :)

and cheers will, kinda expected you to step in here :) the Dovos look good, although i really have no idea where to start on what makes a good razor, i'm guessing the blade is the main thing :)

Put it this way a proper decent single blade razor will cost you starting around £50 - it's a bit expensive but it has to be good quality steel.

Double edged safety razors> Gilette.

I have been shaving with one for some time now and get a much closer and, more importantly, cheaper shave than with a Mach 3.

Initial outlay is a bit steep but you get your money back in savings on blades and foam.

I used this place to get the kit http://www.gentlemans-shop.com/ and now buy replacement blades from Tesco/Boots/Ebay.

Good luck with the straight edged, there is a great msn group called 'wet shavers' which offers plenty of advice. Just don't make my mistake and type wet shavers into google.....

I appologise for my naivety, but can someone explain the benefits of a cut throat, safety razor and regular and why the former are better?

It's down to personal preferance. But using a non safety razor tends to give you a closer shave and tends to be sharper too. It's also a skill, but it makes it more of a routine, proper foam, sharpening the blade, applying some oil/balms afterwards - it makes it more of a chore to some, but more pleasureable to others. Ultimately it's down do preference though.

I assume their are special techniques that need to be adopted, especially with cut throats?

I dont blame the airport security, if anything you look foreign, probably have a beard and you have frech accent......The perfect combination for a confistication! :D

I was curious, found this, very interesting.

This from the link, I think it's great......... :)

"Absolutely nothing is more masculine than a shave tool that can take your head clean off. Straight razors practically drip testosterone from their unprotected blades. These bad boys are the reason safety razors exist. They are unassailable icons of dangerous living.

At times called the open razor or cutthroat, straight razors are making something of a comeback as men rediscover the nearly lost art of the traditional shave. And don't kid yourself: straight-razor shaving is an art - one that takes practice, the rock of eye, and a steady hand. Rush the job and you'll be reapplying your Adam's apple with Krazy Glue"

I couldn't sound more english if I tried actually. I don't look english though that I'll admit - I have Mediterranean roots

I understand their reasons for confiscating, it's just bloody annoying.

I'm a bit scared of getting back into it because it is a mixture of being delicate yet firm enough to take the beard off without severing a jugular - which is kind of unpleasant for a shave, and you need more than a few ripped bits of loo roll too...
