Cutting a chunk out of joists to allow projector lift to fit?

If you need to ask this i would seriously advise you get an expert opinion on it, "can i cut through joists" is not something which can be answered without drawings and an understand of building techniques. :)

Don't take this as gospel, but you need a minimum number of joists to create a stiff floor. I'd suggest doubling up on the joints either side and then boxing in the gap would be OK.
You'd need full length joists into the brickwork at either end, and glue and bolt the boards together. You'll also need advice on the rating/spacing of the bolts required

Of course there is a way but you need to get this looked at by a competent builder, some floor restructuring will be required at the very least in order to remove a joist section.

I'd seriously advise getting a builder in if you have to ask, you are going to need to understand the joist loadings and how to modify the floor. This might even be notifiable (require building control inspection)....

You need an engineer to do you a sketch.

Anyone know what needs to be done? I.could do myself

Maybe get some one in to look at it and advise you on which way to proceed before the misses comes crashing through the ceiling?

Just go ahead and cit the joists up. What could go wrong?

Typical overclockers and the need to do things properly...

Would it be OK to cut a through my joists to allow a projector lift to be installed in my ceiling?

Do you live in a house and this is a ground floor room or do you live in a bungalow or is this a top floor room ie it impacts roof joists? What position in the room so you want to fit this? If you live in a flat or lease hold building, forget it btw.

Can you get clear access to the joists from above to see if they are structural and run the full length of the room? What sort of floor is being supported?

Have you looked to see if there is a natural gap where this could fit?

Tbh, if you have joists every 30cm, you can probably do this and just reinforce from above without much issue.

Are you a gambling man?

Would you rather spend a £500-£1k getting it looked at and done by someone who knows what they're doing, or £5-£10k getting a new roof, and ceiling put on, along with re-decorating half the house, if it all collapses? :p

I really wouldn't advise this without the opinion of a structural engineer or similar.

Only one joist needs altered , the house won't suddenly collapse into a pile of rubble :p
