I havnt got much insight to this, but in the last phew days ive been watching various news channels,

and every day theres been something about saving electricity, now i LOL'd at it tbh, the man was there talking about charging phone when its not needed and turning off lights when your not in the room and not leaving your tv on standby, but the bit i LOL'd at is when he said rite at the end, ''After all this you could be wasting UPTO 28POUNDS PER YEAR!!!''

i thought ffs tbh, I believe in recycling because allot is done with recycled things, But i think its took over the top about saving electricity and things like polluting gets on my nerves sometimes as they say things like...in 100-200years it will be very bad.....200 years ? OK and the world could blow up tomorrow in the hands of satan ?...

what do you think about saving electricity and other materials ?
do you think they go over the top ?

as i said i havnt got much insight but i still manage to hear it all the time!

In an ideal world it would be a case of waste not, want not.
But this is the real world we live in sadly.
If we TOTALLY stopped producing C02 TODAY, it would still take around 500 years for the earth to recover..

TV on standby creates a slight amount of warmth so the extra electricity is offset by using less gas in heating bills.
That's my excuse anyway :p

I changed most of our light bulbs to energy efficient ones (not to save the world but as I'm tight!) and currently saves about £4 a week well worth it es when the bulbs only for £5 (sainsburys big ones 3 for £1 and then tesco small candle ones 2 for price 3)

Assuming, of course, you believe that CO2 produced by humans is actually causing problems in the first place.

Well yea, there is that. :D however I was going round the houses in what I actually meant..
Basically what I was trying to say was, the world is going to get warmer and no amount of energy saving is going to make a difference.
Switch to clean energy now or forget it..
Changing light bulbs is like trying to change the wind direction with a fart

I think we need to start with getting business to cut down its usage first then consumers

I think we need to see irrefutable evidence that our CO2 production is causing global warming or any other major problems before we hand over any more money to the government and the EU in the form of "Green Taxes".

its companies who leave their lights + computers + other equipment on 24/7 which use most electricity, even if every single house had all "energy efficient" devices the electricity usage would only reduce an extremely small amount. i reckon global warming isnt 100% true, other planets are heating up too, its probably just the sun getting hotter or something like that and that the "co2 emissions" barely make a difference.

So, who here heard about E-DAY, and who actually did anything?

Someone clearly decided to turn the heating up as we actually used more energy than predicted - not less. Where's that failboat when you need it? :D

I could not give a hoot about global warming/carbon emissions/co2/depleting resources blah blah but I do care how much electricity costs me.

I borrowed an inline wattage meter from work not long ago and wandered round the house plugging various items in to see how much power they drew & the results were quite an eye opener

The end result was my quarterly bill has dropped from £180 to nearer £120 due to not leaving things on when not in use :)

Wouldnt mind the whole standby argument if they actually made appliances that could be turned off without pulling the plug, most of our stuff is on standby when you turn it off, its annoying as I always wake up middle of the night and think the tv on the wall is a bloody aliens eye :)

I remember not long ago, having a visit from one of these people from grittish bass, they were like 'blah blah blah save you money blah blah good for the environment blah' until I explained to her, that if she could save me money, considering my quarterly electricity bill, is only £60 anyway.. I'd be impressed..

And before you ask, only things that I have powered on most of the time, are my computer, and the alarm clock.. (kitchen stuff is irregular, no fridge as I keep everything in fridge at local store)

Hmm so, working on the assumption by doing all this, we all save £28 worth of electricity per year.

If we assume that 1 unit = 10p (not accurate for everyone i know) then thats 280 units of electricity in a year. 1 Unit = 1kW/h.

Now lets assume this was a nationwide thing, everyone turned their light bulbs off and their TV's off from standby (I mean who NEEDS their TV on standby???) and didnt charge their phones until it was needed etc. There are roughly 60,776,238 people in the UK (according to Google) now lets assume, for eases sake that there are 3 people to every household and that everyone in the census lives in a house of their own, so thats now 20,258,746 households.

Now if each of these households saved the aforementioned £28 worth of electricity per year, nationally we would be using 56,724,488,80 kW/h less than we currently do.

Personally I don't think thats an insubstantial amount.

Of course there are HUGE innacuracies in the above, but its an interesting rough figure don't you think?

Personal savings and contributions can be small, the cumulative effect can be far more impressive.

By looking at every electrical item in my house, I have been able to reduce by electric bill from an average of £120 a quarter to around £85.

I now use LED lights in most rooms (and even the security lights outside) - even switched to solar for some stuff.

I also looked at the big lecky guzlers (like fridge/shower/cooker etc) and made some changes.

So £35 better off every 3 months is a result I would say.
