Is it possible to do this yourself? My guinea pigs front teeth are overgrown and need cutting and my mum says she'll do it herself but it seems abit dangerous for the pig that is?

Also apparently they have back teeth and you cant really see them and they could be overgrown?

They shouldn't be like that in the first place. Do you not provide them with gnawing materials like pieces of wood and chew toys? They need this as they constantly need to grind down their teeth for exactly this reason.

In answer to your question, take it to someone that knows what they're doing as if they **** it up, it'll cost you twice as much to sort and the GP will be in a lot of pain.

He chews on the wood of the hutch and always has plenty to eat like carrots etc...

My mum had him laid down and my dad had some cutters but I managed to stop them doing it!!!! you could see him on his back he was distressed poor thing :(, judging by how much he was moving using cutters could end up yanking his tooth out.

My last rabbit I had died at the vets having his tooth cut and something removed as his tooth cut inside him, he hemorrhaged in anesthetic and died, my um thinks the pig would never come out of anesthetic too as he's old and apparently they use anesthetic.

Well it appears my dad is going to try, he's looking for my wire clippers I wont tell him where they are but he's going to get them and cut the teeth with that :\

Pig is squeaking he's gonna have a heart attack I think :( his teeth are going to be so mangled and not the sharp for cutting..

Yea I think so, my parents cant afford it apparently, I said use the overdraft then.

I don't know whats up with him, seems he improved abit, my mum called the vets she was getting upset, he was just laying down and I picked him up and put him on my lap and it's weird, it's like his breathing is slowing down and his sides are puffing up and back down every second like a big heartbeat but don't know if it's his breathing, my mum was like he wont last the day :(

They are going to take it to the vet not his condition seems to have gone for the worse since attempting to cut his teeth.

My dad did not do it in the end, he said he dare not cause he was twitching too much, glad they did not, hopefully he'll survive but it did seem like he was dieing! :(

Yea will do.

We put him back in his outside pen on the grass and he was stood up and his head was sort of nodding each time he had a breath, then he just flopped down on his side, so he's getting old and he wont be with us much longer :(, but we've had him about 4 years now, I think he might be about 5 human years old so toward the end of his life.

Shame we could not get the rabbit and pig to live together.

If you read I said my dad was going to try wire cutters, not me I would not do that, from the time I heard about doing it DIY I said don't and take him to the vets.

I don't think the pig is dieing as a result of this, maybe it's him old and a knock on effect of his overgrown teeth, he seemed to have being eating fine but we have noticed he lost some weight.

It appears to run in the family. The OP, instead of posting on a hardware forum, should've taken the animal to the vet in the first place. Sometimes I am ashamed to be human.

Appears to run in the family? wtf.....

What a ****** you are

I went outside this morning to get my cycle stuff and seen in his cage, he is laying there dead unfortunatly :(, the VET said there was nothing else wrong with him apart from he's probably very old, they said if he appears in distress put him down.

The only thing was when his stomach was touched he twitched, but it's a sad day and some of the comments in here are very uncalled for, their was nothing wrong with the question on here as tbh there is people experienced with all sorts of things and I knew I'd get just as good a answer on here as most pet forums.

David n.c I don't think the second paragraph is mental at all.

We buried him now, I'm guessing something went wrong with his stomach or something, I noticed diarrhea and my mum said it appears as if he was trying to go to the toilet at the time of death as bits where coming out. But the vet just said let nature take it's course, my dad seen him at about half 3am and he looked fine, I seen him about half 7am so in that 4 hours he passed away.

Agreed - we had 2 and never had to cut their teeth but we took them to get their nails clipped a few times.

Guinea pigs get stressed easily and too much stress can kill them. One of ours got injured in the garden and after taking her to the vet it took a good few days for her to settle back down poor thing :(

Love guinea pigs though, awesome pets. Sorry to hear he died :(

Our two lasted a good four years too I think. I presume guinea pigs don't have nerves in or around their teeth? As it would be agonising pain for them if there were.

His teeth where really long he was stopping eating, he picked up eating again once they where cut but he never started eating much anymore.

He developed this nodding over the last couple of days, he was sitting there breathing and it made his head nod abit or something.

I was out for a couple of hours near the hutch cleaning my bike and he was just laying there his eyes not wide open but he looked quite relaxed most of the time although now and again he'd move as it appeared his stomach might have being giving him bother, but usually if he was in pain I know he'd definitely make noise but was not making any.

My parents are not cruel to animals, we have a rabbit who is healthy, has full roam of the garden, and comes in the house for a few hours when it's winter and has plenty of attention from us and if we think anything is wrong we'd take him to the vets, just this occasion with the pig my parents insisted they could do it themselves, apparently a neighbor said they did there guinea pigs teeth fine.

I've always noticed, when I was stroking the pig if you sort of slowly stroked across the top of his head, from his nose up, he'd have some reaction and suddenly move his head all the way up in the air, really odd.

I don't think we'll be getting another guinea pig for some time now anyway, I still forget he's gone sometimes and when I go out always look at the top of the hutch to see where he is, I'll miss the little thing but I'm no where near as upset as when out last rabbit died, that was really upsetting, we brought him home and buried him in the garden, could see blood out of his nose and mouth, the last time I seen him he was in the cage to go to the vet and was abit frustrated as he jumped out and ran into the bushes at like 7 in the morning and it was dark and we had to go find him, wish I'd have last seen him in a better state.

Troll thread or genuine special needs family?

No you're the troll and if anyone requires special needs it's you.

Yeah mine used to do that too :p They don't really like it so they kind of butt your hand away with their head.

They also hate it if you stroke their fur backwards (against the fur), mine used to make a kind of vibrating sound.

These were ours :p

They look cute :p, I think if in time we might get another guinea pig but get 2 instead so they have more company.

R.I.P Mr guinea pig:(. Amazing how many ****ing idiots their are out there! Someone obviously had a brain fart when they attempted to do DIY dentistry:rolleyes:.

Well tbh I was mainly worried because I thought my parents where using the wrong tools, obviously a wire clipper was stupid, but the first time they where going to use the nail clippers and it seems they are pretty much the same as what the vets used to cut the teeth.

Thats gutting, rip wee fella :(

They are very sensitive animals... and from the way you described the events as having happened, your dads attempt at clipping his teeth SEVERELY stressed him! :( I know you went to the vet after, but it sounds like the damage was done.

It's certainly not what killed him, these events just where a coincidence, it was definitely something with his stomach, might have being something he ate as he'd eat anything.

I KNOW YOU ARE BUT WHAT AM I

You even prove you're a retard too.

Perfectly sensible question in that thread.

His dad was about to attempt DIY dentistry, with wire cutters, on a 4 year old Guinea Pig, hence, unfortunately, it appears to be the latter.

So something my dad did you have to put the blame onto me? You don't know my family, I don't know yours, but if anything I'd assume mine have more sense than yours as I don't go round Internet forums provoking personal attacks.

Half of the people may think they are perfect on here, but if they where perfect, what are they doing on here?

But I don't like food poisoning.

You are going along with the thinking of, if I know something and this person does not they are stupid. That's stupid thinking. And then putting the blame of someone else onto another and making personal attacks against that person is really not nice and it shows what kind of a person you are.

You are trying to make me out something I'm not.

Are you on drugs?

Most whiney person ever.

I don't take drugs but I suspect lots of people on here do. I'm not a whiny person at all, but I don't like uncalled for personal attacks such as being called "special needs" and it goes to show what kind of person they are in real live.

g, i'd ask WTF he thought he was doing.

What makes you think I did not ask what he was doing and that I did not tell him it was a stupid and cruel thing to do.

It turned into an argument, but doing that does not make someone "special needs", those sort of comments are pathetic and the person who says such thing is clearly weird in the head.

They took him to the vet, cost £13 for his teeth to be clipped, I think my parents knew it'd be allot and thought they would do it as it does not even take a couple of mins to cut a guinea pigs teeth and it costs that much.

The cause of death was no related to what my parents did, I repeat it was not related and did not push him over the edge. He was about over 5 years old too.
