i've been told to keep it simple

contact details
skills
qualifications
work history
schooling

But i am getting stuck at what i can put down under skills? what sort of thing should i put under here? (i know its my skills but its getting them into bullet points thats the problem)

what sort of job is it? If its an IT job, obviously here is where you list your skills areas...

Service Oriented Architecture (2 years)
C# OO Development (2 years)
RAD Development Methodologies (3 years)
etc etc

What profession are you applying for?

Remember, someone will read your CV who has 100's more to read. A quick list of bullet points that makes you interesting/good for that job/role goes a long way. So, what can you sell yourself on for this role?

Telecoms installation technician. Currently my job is made up of installing, maintaining and supporting various telephone exchange platforms globally

but i am getting a bit "tripped" out, the new job is a home based job with a smaller company on more money

It's hard for me to comment as don't know your trade, but don't be afraid to really big yourself up. Find out what the buzz words are, and remember that skills don't necessarily mean qualifications.

Also, it doesn't hurt to highlight any buzzwords in Bold.

Hope this is some help, but I'm not an IT dude so it's difficult to be specific!

What about explaining long periods out of employment say like a year.

How would one rephrase " Career Break " more eloquently.

My skills are similar to yours but Java based not C# / .net

Keep it short and simple, no long paragraphs or too much to read.

Have looked through loads of CVs recently and amazing how many people think it is necessary to write a whole essay :p out of about 50 only put a few to the side which looked interesting

The best CV I had was just 1 page of A4 got me interviews galore that one did. Dont think I could do that again though. 2 pages might be right

I only ever made one CV, showed it to a few people who told me it was great - only ever sent it out once and went to one interview and there after 2 years - so must have done something right :p

Although I did lie a little on it .. said that I left college out of personal choice even though they told me not to come back :o Quite relieving one of the first things my boss said in the interview was "You don't need any education" :D

say you saved up for a year and went travelling. Shows commitment with the saving bit, and an outgoing personality travelling.

When I've had IT developers (jave, .net, asp) CV's through they all start with a personal details section (name, D.O.B, whether you have a drivers license etc), personal statement (I am seeking a viaried role in your blah blah), list of skills and time using said skills
(Service Oriented Architecture (2 years)
C# OO Development (2 years)
RAD Development Methodologies (3 years) etc)
Then a surmised description of previous jobs in chronical order. Some CV's come through, same format, but with interests at the end. Personally, the interests interest me as it gives me a idea whether you are a bell-end or not! LOL. BTW, I'll ask yu to tell a joke during the interview aswell! :)

My CV is between 5-7 pages long! Gets me an interview everytime. Best advise is anything under 4 pages for IT work is preferred. Other industries, I dont know what they prefer

@benktlottie : Thanks for the advice mate - I've been out of the loop for a year but am primarily a developer and as a true developer : develop a lot in my spare time.

Trouble is that when you're out on a limb coming up with projects that are related to whats going on in the workplace is tricky. Lets take Spring and IoC for example its bigger than Java itself and so just slapping that on your CV is asking for trouble namely because one does not know what aspects of the framework is in use at any given company.

It doesn't help that I have not applied for any jobs either ! So I'm going to get my skates on soon. Any tips as to whats " in " at the moment for the J2ee / web frameworks fields.

Would you like me to try and gather a couple of sample CV's for you ?

I would really appreciate that ! Obviously get rid of the names for legal reasons and just keep the body it would be interesting to see how much ppl * elaborate * these days ! ...

Many many thanks in advance. I'll definitely have to get you a few pints or something in the post.
