Cyanide...

yeah, but it doen't say "yeah cyanide kills you insantly" or "no it kills you over time, like being sufocated" (ie it gets complex)
 
As others have said, it depends. Back in my uni's chemistry deptartment, they sometimes had to dissolve a cyanide compound (kills you) in DMSO (good at going through the skin). That particular mixture they called "liquid death" as it kills you fairly quickly after touching it....... (about 2 mins)

It will knock you out in a few seconds but wont kill you for a while:

"Once more than 100–200 mg of potassium cyanide is consumed, consciousness is lost within one minute, sometimes within 10 seconds, depending on the strength of the body's immunity and the amount of food present in the stomach. After a span of about 45 minutes, the body goes into a state of coma or deep sleep and the person may die within two hours if not treated medically. During this period, convulsions may occur. Death occurs mainly by cardiac arrest."

I was just curious as to how these things were reportedly supposed to kill you fatally dead completely within a few seconds.
 
Someone losing consciousness in ~10 seconds is good enough. The point is: you will die. The death part doesn't have to be instant, the fact that you'd be unconscious in under a minute and thus cannot possibly be interrogated whilst out cold is.
 
I keep mine in a locked fireproof cabinet.
the oral LD50 for a rat is 5mg/kg (that is 50% of rats given this dose will die )

i've heard about this, but fortunately i've never had to go anywhere near anything involving doing anything like this, but they do let us loose on cyanide compounds, without too much warning, that and things like LiAlH4 (scary)

today is Cyanide and the toxin from the scorpion Buthus tamulus (Iberiotoxin) Sometimes we use TTX which is the toxin from the puffer fish which makes eating sushi so much fun :)

today i've mainly been in bed on the laptop, though i should really be in labs messing about with anatase and nano stuff for my project
 
I thought Cyanide worked by inhibiting the enzyme that catalyses Hydrogen Peroxide in the body or something like that...

A quick search on google reveals that I am probably wrong, but I'm sure Cyanide has an effect on Hydrogen Peroxide breakdown. Any one explain this for me?
