Cycle lights

My Winter riding setup consists of 2x Tesco Cree AA's and 2x Edinburgh Bike Co-op Revolution Vision high power LED's fitted to 2x BLT bar mounts which allows me to have one light up and one down/underneath. Also under the bars are two small LED clip on's which I set to strobe alternately.

I've got the AA Cree's angled so they light up the road further ahead and the Revolution LED's pointing slightly downwards so they light up the road immediately in front of you. Seems like a good combo and so far its working well. Some old pic's are below, as I said, I've now got the same setup on both sides but in the pic's the second BLT isn't fitted with the other Revolution LED in these pics.

Wow! that's a lot of kit. How much did this set you back? Whilst I'm sure it gives the light you need, would a single more expensive lamp give you the same coverage? Is it easy to remove all that? as I'm not sure it would suit a commuter set-up very well (which is what I'm looking for).

Holy-busy-handlebars-batman!

LOL!! You would be surprised at the amount of room left even with all that fitted. The TT bars aren't on the bike at the moment as I took them off to fit Specialized BG Gel and bar wrap and haven't got around to refitting the aero bars.

Wasn't that expensive. The Tesco Cree AA torches were £10 each. The Revolution LED lights were £20 each and the BLT Space shuttle mounts were a couple of quid apiece. Forgot to say that I also have 2x Twofish Lockblocks there also.

Takes a few minutes to remove it all and as far as suiting a commuter set-up, yeah - The Pinarello is my only bike and I use it for everything including my 36 mile commute which gets done 4 times a week.

I think, as already has been mentioned, is that there is a large difference in the choice you make for lights if you're cycling in town with street lights, and if you're cycling in pitch black darkness.

Still waiting for my lights, the company dealextreme hasn't even got the stock from it's suppliers yet, so I think it'll be a while yet.

OK, well I got the lights on Friday and very chuffed with them. They are nowhere near as big as you'd think they'd be by looking on the websites. They're fairly small, with a heavy duty feel. About 140gramms a piece with the battery in.

They are very, very bright - almost ridiculously so. I bought two of them and with both of them on together you get a very good amount of light with them. Drove to a country lane earlier in the dark and you could see a good long way. Couldnt give you anything but a guesstimate of... pfft. Err, 80 feet. Who knows. I'll have to have work it out one day. We have a long garden and it lights the end up qiute nicely, put it that way! They have two settings, and even the dimmer one is pretty bright.

Would certainly recommend them. For about £70 I got two lights, 8 batteries (they only take one each - not the two that I thought, so I have 4 spare for each light!) and two mains chargers that charges 2 batteries at a time each. Considering a single light by cateye is £90 - which I could not possibly imagine would be as bright as one, let alone two of these - I think they're a good purchase.

Unfortunately, the stock is a lie. I've got an order on hold with them at the moment that I placed a week or so ago. They've said they will try to get some, but don't know if they will be able to.

Ah right, bad luck!!.

I assume there has been a "run" on the BLT mounts since its the time of the year when everyone starts thinking about refitting their lights again or maybe getting new ones.

Good luck in finding them. They are very handy bits of kit, I'm sure someone will have them back in stock soon.

One thing though, whilst I'm here, is that I'll need to find a suitable bracket to fix it properly to my bike.

I got two of the brackets recommended by the site up there, but they only grip in line with the torch. I'd need a bracket that firmly holds it in place, but at right angles to the handle bar. I don't think I could properly affix the lights to the handlebars in a suitable position otherwise, as it stands.

Dropped them a note to point out the error on their site and they said they have them in stock, it's jsut the shop didn't respond the first time they were asked (guess that's the problem with a co-op rather than a single store) so they are now on their way.

Woot.

Look at Twofish Lockblocks that Dreager recommended (you can see them holding the tesco CREE lights to the BLTs).

The P4 LED based torches from DealExtreme.com offer top VFM. They use 18650 battery cells, so if you bought a charger and a few sets of batteries from DX you can rotate sets whilst charging etc. The downside of 18650 cells is you can't easily get them a cheap price in the UK, but delivery from DX is usually a week or so.

Review of the P4 here : http://www.mtbbritain.co.uk/mountain_bike_lights_review_led.html

You might find the P4 would dazzle on-coming car drivers though.

Rear lights - plenty of info here:

The P4 is unregulated tho, I think the Fenix equivelent would be far better and safer.
