Cycle Scheme working out more expensive?

Yeah, I've just checked my contract after thinking, I'm actually technically only borrowing it for another 36 months as well, I though I took ownership after that, although the consensus seems to be that the bike will be worth not a lot at the end of 4 years, so will likely just take ownership.

This is why it's just a scam of a scheme.

They also sometimes omit to tell you that your SHOULD take out insurance also (and by this I mean pushbike insurance)

If you have an accident on the road or a hit by a car - if the bike is damaged or written off, you still have to pay the remaining price IN FULL and you will be liable for any damage to pedestrians / cars etc - even if you hospitalised / killed etc

Unless of course you join a good cycle club and are put on their insurance.

When my Cyclescheme ran out, I got told I could pay the current value of the bike (40% of its actual value) Send the bike back at my expense or sign for another year and the bike would be signed over to my ownership for a nominal fee after the extra year (fee will be £17.50) So it sounds a bit steep to me, but my bike only cost £500

I had the same options, really rubbish deal, it was much better about 3-4 years ago, you got the bike much cheaper.
But the current scheme is rubbish, really does seem like you pay a hell of a lot more for the bike than its worth if you want to take ownership of it...

I think it comes down to the estimated value of the bike after a while as well, my bike was cheaper to start with so lost value quicker, where as a £1000 bike is still likely to be worth close to its original value after a year

They made some changes a year or so ago which made it not as good, but it's still a good scheme especially considering evans regularly have offers such as trade in etc.

It works out much better if you are a higher rate tax payer, I have just signed up for a new bike for the 2nd year running.

I never had those options on my scheme; I paid my money every month and got to keep the bike at the end of it. Then the year after I could enrol again if I wanted. I only ended up paying ~£600 for my £1000 road bike.

around 700-1000 is where the decent push bikes start, you can get pushbikes that cost 5-7k

That depend entirely on what you class as "decent" and how many fancy gadgets you want...

If you want an airodynamic carbon fibre frame with full hydraulic brakes etc. then sure, you're talking several £k, but you can get a decent alloy frame hardtail with rigid forks and good quality components for sub £500 if you know what you're looking for.

The problem is that people expect to be able to get something with full suspension and disc brakes for £200 from Halfrauds, and then are surprised when it weighs 2 tons and rusts to pieces after 6 months :p

Bike prices have inflated significantly over the last 6 years.

In 2008 I bought a Carbon Specialized MTB for £2,800, the same bike now with equivalent spec is £4,600 !!

I've just looked actually, and you're right. There are still some available at <£500, but the choice is very limited!

I remember working in a bike shop while at college, and I think the most expensive model we had was ~£2,000, and there were only 3-4 over £1,000...

yea I've got a hybrid from halfords that cost 600 and it still going strong 1200miles later not even had a puncture.

replaced it at the start of the month with a cx bike though :D

(unless this wasn't meant as a negative of the scheme :p)
