Cycle to work scheme - any point?

I will point out cyclescheme don't actually hire for the full four years. They extend the hire period it so you hire the bike for three years and seven months. Rounded up that is four years. That's another little bit where they help you out or work it so they get their money sooner rather than later!

As said some shops will not sell you a bike at sale price on the scheme. Hargroves is one of those. Some however will so it does pay to shop around.

Amiga you big cheat :p

You can still do the "four year hire" thing even if you sell the bike the day after you get it ;)

True, but they have disincentivised (is that a word?) it now by removing the ability to buy the bike after 12 months.

The scheme is now geared towards people who actually want to buy and keep a bike for themselves, which is how it should be. It works well, I've got so much being taken out of my pay and a monthly salary that fluctuates all over the place due to varying expenses that I didn't even notice that the payments were going out. I've just got a shiny (and very under used) bike I didn't pay anything for when I picked it up.

your kids RC motor doesn't count :p

it has to have fire and explosions and pistons firing at thousands of rpm all aimed at your gonads for it to be a real mans bike :p

Well this version used to out drag some 125cc bikes - if you could stop the front wheel spinning! 3.3bhp on a 22kg bike - 150bhp/ton ;-) And 125nm of torque!

Anything other than walking is cheating - everything else is using a machine to make travelling easier/faster ;)

But we're the enlightened minorty Dimple - the future will be a shock for the others :D

Don't I know it. Puncture 4 miles into my 6.5 mile commute this morning resulted in a 2.5mile run / jog pushing bike with flat tyre and quite a heavy bag all done in SPD shoes...I just know tomorrow I'll be waking up with sore shins. This afternoons task, fix puncture! I deliberated sorting it at the time but as I only have a small hand pump decided running would get me to work quicker than fixing / pumping up the tyre and cycling. Cycling is MUCH more fun than running :D

Takes 10 minutes to change a tube, much quicker than running 2.5 miles in SPD's with a bike..!

So the kit was on the work scheme then.

Can't seem to see any shops in work scheme that sell bikes and conversion kits.

No. Just the bike on the cyclescheme and I got the electric conversion parts from lots of different places (check the build log linked earlier).

Cytronex take cycle vouchers - the voucher pays for the bike and you pay for the conversion kit. They aren't the best value though - you could buy the bike and a seperate kit and it would be cheaper and better performing than a Cytronex equivalent.

Indeed. I'm not a fan of electric cycles, but not because I'd consider them cheating (it isn't) but rather I find the ones you can buy either ugly, heavy, overpriced or a combination of all three.

Not got the skills to make a conversation kit plus it ruins the aesthetics IMHO.

Yes only someone very cleverly hasn't patched their spare tube after the last puncture. My own fault. I have a repair kit too in my bag so I'll get home via pedal power :D

I keep meaning to buy some of those Co2 canisters as a tube change / pump up wouldn't take long at all then. That plus a nice Tubus pannier rack and bags are next on my shopping list.

no soul though :(

although admittedly i am looking forward to decent electric motorbikes, but i do worry they'll lack a bit of passion, but they will be monsters.

Skip to 4:20 and why explosions don't matter.

yeah i know they're starting to come out but the charging times and weight don't make them that practical. you don't have to convince me of their performance one smashed the panigalie at pikes peak. the ability to have full torque at 0 rpm makes a huge difference i na bike.

but you gotta admit as it accelarates thers a lot less dram/feeling to it.

So no way to get the conversion kit with cyclescheme voucher then.

I don't think my latest looks too bad and also come the nicer weather it takes 2 minutes to replace the front wheel with a normal one, remove the battery and you're back to square one for a nice Sunday morning ride.
I have removed the bell.
