cycle to work scheme

A change in job location has tempted me to invest in a new bike (not made out of wrought iron and rivets would be nice.) and have been looking at the cycle to work scheme.

has anyone done this and if so how did it work out?

I've read that you're only really "hiring" the bike for 12/18 months and that at the end of the contract you have to buy it anyway? did anyone have to do this?

any advice would be brilliant, I'm not a higher band tax payer so wouldn't be saving as much but I think it could be worth it!

we don't get ipods
or showers in my area (I could get showered in the other block but it would take another 20-25 mins to get down there and back! plus shower time!)
rides only a mile or so so I don't get sweaty!

thought I'd give everyone an update on this,
fat cats want to claw back more at the end of the hire period
gone from 5% to 18%+!
anyone experience this?
