Cycling from London to Shangahi

You won't make it in 365 days.

Lol its not a race :p got some expert info I'm missing out on?

Hats off to you! I hope you have a great trip and I look forward to reading about your journey.

I returned from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan last month. I didn't do any cycling but met many people who were and think it's a great way to travel.

I met a couple of English guys who had been cycling for several months and one of them had taken the place of a friend who had died. They were carrying around their friend's ashes and scattering them in appropriate places which I thought was incredibly touching.

Watch out the altitude in the Pamirs! I definitely recommend making a detour to the Wakhan Valley if you have the time.

Stay safe!

Very cool idea with the ashes. Did you go just to travel or for work?

Try and stay safe and good luck !
I shall be cheering for you :)

Cheers! I'll be cautious.

Here's one piece of advice. Cyclists are not allowed on main roads in Hungary and there are no side / back roads to travel through. Prepare to be beeped at, continuously by massive lorries and fined heavily if the police come across you.

Other than that. Best of luck :)

I'm going to keep following the Danube cycle path to Belgrade, it's still 50% on the dykes in Hungary and the other on roads but they are signposted for the bike path. Shouldn't get any trouble from police but I am more than used to being beeped at! So far the UK is the worst place to cycle.

Cheers for the best wishes!

I was in Kyrgyzstan over the summer, I wouldn't fancy cycling on their roads, the drivers are mental although the roads are fairly wide. Amazing country though, friendly people and everything is VERY cheap.

In fact we saw a group of canadians on a cycling trip while we were there.

It's been getting really really popular with cyclists in the last couple of years, mostly due to cheapish flights (<£400 from London), the fact they made the place visa free and the breathtaking scenery!

None of the blogs I've read complain about the traffic there, but then again most of the people will have just have been through Iran where it's much worse!

Awesome updates as usual.
Still jealous. Still need to plan such a trip like yours and others. Especially as i can take a one off sabbatical from work. No idea what though.

I'm in the middle of writing another one, Vienna to Budapest. Should be up in an hour or so :).

I have the opposite problem, I have several other big trips I'd love to do!

  1. Tromso to Cape Town on a bicycle.
  2. Dead Horse to Ushuaia by bicycle.
  3. Sail the Atlantic
  4. Cycle from Yakutsk to Magadan
  5. 3 day hike from Longyearbyen to Barentsberg. I think walking from a western town to a Russian one would be so surreal!
  6. Climb Mt. Damavand
  7. Drive the Mongol rally with my Dad

Great blogs and and awesome journey. Really wish I could do something like this, but I just can't afford to. Just remember though, you're in Central/Eastern Europe now so if a hot woman recommends you a good cheap hostel get on the bike and run away.

Subscribed.

I didn't have good luck with cheap hostels in Croatia!

On that note, next installment, Budapest to Serbia via Croatia;

Goose crackling, hell yeah.

Hungry in general sounds the most interesting place youve been so far, certainly the most intresting sounding.
Paprika mesum, thats just cool.

The crackling was amazing. Half way between crispy duck and pork scratchings. Hungary has been really good. I really enjoyed Austria too despite the boar.

Even though I've been here one day Serbia is feeling like the first place where the culture has changed quite a bit.

My flights certainly weren't that cheap (went via turkey for the better airlines). To be honest the traffic might not be so bad off the main roads. There were hardly any cars at all up in the mountains.

I've seen London to Bishkek via Istanbul go as low as £350 with Pegasus I think. You can sometimes get good deals to Osh as well.

Edit: Just realised I was late to the party - Had a read through of the blog... Fair play to you! Good read! Shall continue to follow :)

Haha yeah been going awhile now. Just got to Belgrade 3 hours ago. Glad you like the blog! I'm proud of the quality of some of the writing but other bits I've just had to hammer out quickly when I can so I don't get too far behind with it.
