Aren't you scared about your bike being stolen or getting mugged? How do you keep your belongings secure?

I highly recommend it. You don't need to be fit or an expert on bikes either, you get fit along the way and can learn as you go.

I'm looking forward to Iran too! I've bought a VPN that means I should be able to keep the blogs going whilst I am there (wordpress is blocked in Iran and China normally.).

My passport and wallet are always on me. When I go in shops I'm usually just very quick or I do the majority of my food shopping when I stay in a hostel and can leave my bike somewhere safe.

At the beginning I was more paranoid but now I have the view of if something happens it happens. I can't worry about everything all the time. If I wake up one morning and my bike is gone from the garage of a hotel then I'll figure something out :).

Nice read. I have seen some stunning photos from Armenia and have wanted to visit since. Deserves to be much be much better known as a tourist destination.

Re the drive side spoke problem. One solution is to get a couple of Fiber Fix spokes. They should be enough to get you to a bike shop. http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/fiber-fix-emergency-replacement-spoke-prod20155/

Or you can get a lockring remover that works against your bike frame http://www.uniortools.com/product/pocket-spoke-and-freewheel-remover-wrench-1669-4 This works very well but you need to be careful that your lockring isn't too tight or you can damage the frame/derailleur hanger and don't overtighten when putting back on as the mini tool gives huge leverage.

The problem is getting a hold of things as from now on shipping becomes impossible or costs a fortune.

The cassette tool I got in Yerevan should do, failing that I've read a trick where you file the spoke flange down into a hook so you can hook it in instead of feed it through. Apparently this is still as string but I think I'd only do this as a last resort.

I've got Witopia, $40 for 6 months. Apparently they are good for Iran/China but obviously not had the chance to test yet!

Go for it! One of the best things I've ever done. A big tip, plan a route that avoids as much winter as possible. Cycle touring in winter is a really unpleasant grind, do-able but tough to enjoy.

Boiling hot now but had a bad night last night camping 2,100m up at -11c.
