cyclists

What I found was that on cycle paths they get extremely slippery in autumn, and freeze much quicker than the roads. It was actually safer to ride on the road than use the cycle paths at certain times for these reasons alone.

There are more idiots sitting behind a wheel Tefal, and their idiocy is far more dangerous. I suggest you direct your angst in that direction.

My main problem with cyclists is they don't maintain the speed of the traffic. I used to get stuck behind a lady every morning in rush hour because she was cycling at 15mph in a 30/40mph where there was no where to pass. She used to single handedly caused miles of traffic jams which she then repeated in the evening rush hour the other way lol

No, she didn't cause traffic. People driving cause traffic.

My main problem is that I do and motorist can't account for it.
This morning riding along the road at 24 mph and a Taxi pulls out straight in front of me and I brake in time.
Same road on Thursday last week and a car does the same and I just miss it but this time two pedestrians tear into the driver.
About 8 weeks ago on the same road I was doing 24 when a driver pulled out and I ended up in A&E with cracked ribs.
Believe it or not this road is safer than my alternative routes and I could only be safer if I rode on the pavement which I won't do.
Last week I was doing 34 down a road (on a bank), driver from the right looks straight at me and pulls out but luckily I was able to go round him.
and so on ............................
I can't count the times over the last 3 years of commuting how many cars just pull out, pull in or left hook because they can't judge how fast I'm going.
I really don't know what the answer is because as far as I'm concerned I try to be 99% compliant.

i was emailed an article about a campaign for cyclist to be allowed to go through red lights in certain areas of London. At first i thought that would just be chaos but the more i read it the more it made sense.

If you actively try to "keep out of the way" by darting in and out of lane, jumping on and off of the path, and hugging the curb when you do ride on the road you're actually posing a much bigger danger to both yourself and other road users/pedestrians because of how unpredictable you are, how invisible you can be and how much you limit your options if you ever need to avoid an obstacle or pothole or person.

Why would I do that when I could just move over a little when a car is going past?

if you're overtaking then you should leave a big gap anyway... which means you're going to be into the opposite lane while overtaking anyway

Unfortunately that isn't always practical or possible on todays roads. I'm not going to sit behind a cyclist for 25 minutes at rush hour so that I can leave them the "required" amount of space, when I can pass them with 18 inches of space almost straight away.

Most cyclists are probably drivers as well, so they just ride a bike like they (attempt) to drive a car, I.E. very badly. Shock horror, majority of road users who can't use a car can't ride a bike either.

Describing them as cyclists is a misnomer, they just happen to be riding a bike at the time, they're just people and unfortunately 95% of people are idiots.

I'm sorry. Let me repeat that then.

Cyclists don't cause traffic jams. People driving cars cause traffic jams.

Yes, they do.
Slowly moving cyclists on narrow roads can cause delays and tailbacks of said traffic, as evidenced in his post. Which was his point.

Would there have been a jam on the road he mentioned if said lady hadn't been holding everyone up? I don't know and neither do you.

Generally speaking, of course it's traffic that cause jams, but you seem to be intentionally missing the context in his post to try and look clever on the internet.

What is it with the mentality of bicycle riders that they just think that any common sense shouldn't apply to them?

Back to the original question asked above:

What is it with the mentality of car drivers that they just think that any common sense shouldn't apply to them? (driving while texting, drink driving, tailgating, driving with lights out at night, driving with fog lights on all the time, speeding)

What is it with the mentality of pedestrians that they just think that any common sense shouldn't apply to them? (crossing the road without looking, walking on cycle lanes, walking on unlit shared paths at night in completely dark clothing)

Common factor: people. As other posters have mentioned in the thread already, people are idiots. I'm under no illusions that I am too at times :p

A sizeable minority of cyclists are complete morons, but then they probably go home and hop in their cars and drive about in an equally moronic fashion.

It seems that a lot of major cities are doing it - http://www.theguardian.com/cities/2015/oct/27/cyclists-run-red-lights-paris-london-san-francisco

That's interesting that in San Francisco cyclists protested against a police crackdown by rigidly obeying traffic laws and brought traffic to a halt.

Personally, I don't see a problem with cyclists going through red lights as long they slow down and check that it's absolutely safe to do so.
That way, at least drivers don't have to wait for them when the lights go green and it keeps things moving.

The ones that just sail through regardless are a different matter.
