I'm due to start a new job closer to home and also registered for the London to Brighton off road next year. Decided i need a new bike as currently have a HT and FS as mainly an MTB rider.

Probably looking at a budget between £1-2K. Commute will be 17 miles each way of mainly country lanes. Any recommendations?

Thanks.

Get an adventure bike not a cyclocross bike. Something like a Pinnacle Arkose 4, Genesis equivalent, 105 level groupset with hydraulic brakes, but capability to mount racks/mudguards.

Whats the difference?

I've been looking on PinkBike and happy with a second hand bike.

Not really fussed about speed and weight too much. Its going to be lighter and faster than what I've currently got plus the lanes can get muddy and have a load of pot holes.

Boardman CX Team might be worth a look? Roughly £800 with Halfords British Cycling discount. Sram Rival 1x11 with hydraulic brakes so it's not going to be your friend at fast speeds on the road but will cope with most stuff fine.

You'd learn to spin as the spread of gears would be big so you'd have to increase cadence to compensate i think, but you wouldn't have to worry about spinning out the top gear.

44x10 is still a big gear!

Yeah I was mostly thinking for downhills but that's not exactly a huge issue and is only going to save seconds anyway.

I've been considering this one myself. Generally quite a spinner anyway 95-110 usually to the point where 80rpm feels like leg death sometimes :D

If he's up for building it himself, you can build up a Genesis 725 frameset with Ultegra Di2 and Hydraulic brakes for 2k.

Not sure why anyone would spend over a grand for something with 105, personally!

I would get used to the gearing pretty quickly although I've never ridden a road bike. Couldn't think of anything worse than riding plan old tarmac. Most of the roadies I pass look miserable :D

Full Groupset including hydros would need over 1k. but I wouldnt spend 2k on a steel frame, horses for courses, and also isnt the 725 more of a tourer?

The Croix maybe, but the Equilibrium has much racier geometry. Not that you're going to win any races on a 10kg Steel workhorse, but the OP isn't after doing CX races - just a lumpy commute.

Fair enough for not wanting to splash out on steel, but after riding a fair few different steel, alu and carbon frames I'd personally pick steel all day long :)

Either way, a similar price to the equilibrium could get you a Kinesis alu frame, or a chinese carbon frame - you're still talking a full build with Di2 for £2k, the frame material is just personal preference.
