D-day landings anniversary today

My grandad was abroad with the army when the war broke out so was in it from the beginning till the end. He passed away in 2006 at 93 years old and was given a military MBE for his services. He would have been 111 this July. I miss him so much and have thousands of questions I would have liked to have asked him now I am older. I know for a fact he would be upset if he saw the state of the country now however.

It really is quite sad that so many young either don’t know or care about D Day..

Those (including my grandfather) who fought would be turning in their graves if they saw the UK today :(

This is why history repeats itself.

Are we under control of an authoritarian dictator? Having mass genocide committed against us? Stopped from leaving the country and shot if you cross the border or defect? Have state propaganda fed to us with no other choices? Starved to death due to excess military spending and sanctions? Can you access all of the internet and have freedom of speech you can protest with? Do we have elections where anyone can stand? A free healthcare system where I don’t mind my money going to help others in need?

We are a free country, which is what he fought for and many of us on here strive to maintain in one form or another.

Of course the country isn’t perfect, we’re all only human and there are many things I would change, but overall I think we have it pretty good.

More like a disorganised and overpopulated mess.

Also no, we can't access all of the internet anymore! And you might get arrested if you "misgender" someone.

The country's perfectly fine, it's the asswipes that inhabit it that ruin it for the rest.

try living in Russia or Ukraine, there were serial killers in Ukraine and one of their victims survived and went straight to the Police.
The Police beat the hell out of him and called him a liar.

is all Russian Media still banned? encase it conflicts with the narrative?

Putins got multiple terminal illness
Russians are fighting with spades after running out of food, fuel, toilet paper and bullets.

Thats what our news tells us.

are we not being fed propaganda? most people seem oblivious to it these days for some reason

Covid was basically the same..... turns out a lot of what they forced on us was absolute crap and AZ disappeared from the world really fast

No but accepting things are not good is a weak trait to have as well.

That'll do attitude never existed in my Grandads time. The stiff upper lip mantra has all been eradicated and we all accept mediocrity.

Ironically when he left the army after 22 years he went to work at ICL due to his skills in the Royal Signals. He was immensely proud of it too. Installing mainframes in many of the big blue chip firms across the country. That company was swallowed up by Fujitsu and gave us the Horizon Post Office Scandal. UK in a nutshell right there.

I’m not looking at things through rose coloured glasses, I’m just aware that you see a lot of examples throughout history and in the modern day of how things could be a lot worse and that do have it pretty good in comparison - I consider myself lucky to have been born here.

Things could always be better, but we’ll need a massive inflection point to unite the whole planet. An alien invasion usually helps…

He fought for our freedom and we are free. I cannot thank him enough for that.

For goodness sakes, how utterly pathetic from the French
Rules are rules. I’ve been on a 4 month deployment to a friendly Middle Eastern country we were operating from at their request and had to undertake a 2 hour drive to the nearest border every 30 days to get my passport re stamped as they wouldn’t give us a longer visa.

My youngest half sister was born in a barracks in West Berlin. Getting her back to UK was interesting so is definitely not a new thing!

It’s hardly surprising though is it ww2 is rapidly fading into the distant past the survivors are few and far between even the children of that generation are fast disappearing. Inevitably time moves on people live in their time not in the past and the details will steadily be eroded ask how many people know the date of the battle of trafalgar or Waterloo and most will not have a clue. It doesn’t diminish the sacrifice of that generation it is just normal.

Anything to do with the D-day landings I was really interested in .

I'd watch long YouTube videos of footage, documentaries based on it and and obviously I think saving private ryan opening scenes relay what is some harrowing stuff they must have gone through . Anything to do with d day or battle of Britain

I have visited trench warfare sites in France from WW1 but I not had the chance to visit the D-Day beaches of WW2.

It's on my list to visit
.

You are the exception not the rule though, the period of history clearly interests you and will continue to interest people for generations but it is now a long distant memory and you can’t expect most of the current generation to want to know all about it.

Im assuming from you tag you were born in 2001 hence the comment. Older generations are very much interested in WW2. I find myself gripped whenever a WW2 documentary comes on the TV. This comes from being taught about WW2 in GCSC History but I hear these days they only touch upon it.
