Thinking of getting a battery grip for my D300. Anyone have one and if so how do they find it.

Got one and love it. Never comes off the camera. But I warn you they are not cheap if you want to use them with the ENL4a batteries. Once you have aded the price of a grip, battery door, battery and charger you are looking at quite a lot of money. Does mean you get LOADS of charge out of it though.

Love mine too. Makes the camera so much easier to hold with my ogre sized hands. As Messiah says, the cost of the ENL4a batteries (and charger) is a borderline joke, I use mine with 8xAA batteries instead as you get an adapter for both types included with the grip.

The increased battery life is obviously vastly increased over the normal internal one, but for some reason I still find I'm changing batteries more frequently that I would like however.

Silly question but what are hoping to get out of having one? If it's simply battery longevity why not just buy a spare battery and put the rest to that 70 - 200 mm lens you're thinking of getting?

Maybr I'm not taxing my D300 enough but the one battery seems to last ages for me :)

Thats why i'm asking just wanted to know if its worth it. I guess I need to feel one on the camera first to see if i like the feel of it. I would not get it just because it gives better longevity as like you said I have a spare battery.

Unless you want or need the higher fps the grip brings to the party, or for handling reasons, then I'd say stick the money into a lens.

Having said that, I have grips for all my dslr's as they feel too small without them!

In most cases though, one en-el3e battery sees me through most shooting situations.

Unless you use Portaits compositions all the time or own some huge primes 400 2.8 etc, or need the extra FPS, It would not be a vlaue for money investment. Cheaper and lighter to buy a couple of spare batteries.

If you just want the extra battery life out of a grip, there is a 3rd party manufacturer that offers a grip with a dedicated Li-ion battery. Supposed to give 5000 shots from a Canon 40D, and I think the info I read said they had loads of types for other DSLR's. I can't find it on a quick google but I have a link at home which i'll post later.

Hahnel do a range of grips for various cameras, including the D300.

Do a google for 'Hahnel HN-D300' and plenty will pop up. Although you don't get the higher FPS with it, you do get a built in IR receiver and remote, as well as the handling and vertical shutter release benefits.

I had a Hahnel grip for my Pentax K20d, and I was pleased with the quality of it.

Dragging this up again, as I never posted the link.

don't think the D300 is covered yet though.

Now i have so we can let it die again..

I've been shooting with a D300 alongside my D3 here in Florida and the D300 feels a bit toy like when switching from the D3, I think the grip would definitely help and if I were keeping the D300 I'd add one...but then I already have 3 ENL4 batteries and two chargers so that helps with the cost of the grip!

Well I went for a battery grip after all, I thought what the hell its Christmas :D

Must say I love the feel of the camera now, just feel more solid. Just need a 50mm f1.4 AFS lens now to stick on it, another cheeky crimbo present to myself ;)

To me, a camera doesn't feel like a camera in my hands until it has a grip on it!

I don't know why, but all my cameras since film days have had motor drives/battery grips and I just prefer them that way.

In my mind, if I wanted small, I'd use a Canon ixus or similar, and as a DSLR without a grip is not exactly small, I like to beef them up for handling reasons by using grips etc.

The MB-D10 does bring an FPS advantage too of course, so at least there's another reason for having it other than aesthetics/handling.

EDIT: LOL at the cheeky present thing. My cheeky present that arrived this morning was a 12-24 lens!!
