Well, some more solid leads of my own.
I was looking for D300 with a website that checks at least 100 camera retailers in Switzerland.

A few weeks ago the searched return dozens of results with boies to ship at 1700CHF.

Now almost every retailer is either out of stock, overdue stock, has stock on order request only, or has item listed as discontinued. The few that have a D300 have prices 1900-2200...

The same behavior is being reported in the US.

Hopefully that means new an updated d700 in the near future, soon as nikon gets FF+HD video I'm jumping ship! =D

The D700 replacement wont be until next year.
Nikon do 2 year cycles.

The D700 replacement will come after the D4 probably, however some kind of D700x may appear with the D3x sensor

Well, one thing you can be sure of is that the D300 will be replaced at some point, that much is obvious!

Something else to bear in mind though, is that apparently Nikon (and Canon etc) expected a big drop off in DSLR sales due to the worldwide recession, and reduced production accordingly. According to some industry reports I've read, they severely underestimated the better than expected demand in DSLR sales, and consequently there is a shortage of kit... There was also a 'rush' due to people wanting to buy current stock before currency fluctuations pushed the prices up in some markets.

The D300 must be near replacement, so I'm not saying there isn't one on the way, but what you've noticed may be due to other factors, not just running down stock before a replacement.

2 year development cycles may not continue in the current climate either, but who knows, other than Nikon of course! :)

If that came up any time soon I'd spring on it, with the caveat that the video must be lossless and not the lossy motion JPEG on the D90 (and assumedly D5000). A DX format lens with proper video would probably also get me to upgrade now, as hanging onto the 17-55mm f/2.8 would be a bonus.
